Trouble overwriting files but not folders..?

Hello,

I get two entirely different looking prompts when overwriting, one asks me if I want to overwrite folders and I can select Yes and press Enter. The other asks me if I want to overwrite files and when I highlight Copy and Replace and press Enter nothing happens. I have to move my mouse over it and click to make it go.

Hello, I think what you are describing is quite normal. Folders give a different prompt than files do.

Why doesn't it overwrite the files when I press enter with Copy and Replace highlighted? I can't figure out how to continue without grabbing the mouse.

I navigate to a folder full of files and subfolders. Press Ctrl + A, Ctrl + C. I navigate to another folder full of the similar files and subfolders that I want to overwrite. I press Ctrl + V. I then I eventually get a popup called confirm folder replace. I press Alt + A, Alt + Y to confirm. Then I eventually get a popup called Copy File. I press Alt + D, Up, Up, Up to select Do this for the next 3379 conflicts and highlight Copy and Replace "Replace the file in the destination folder with the file you are copying:"

Then I press ENTER, ENTER ENTER ENTER ENTER. Nothing happens. I have to stop what I am doing grab the mouse and move it over to click on the Copy and Replace icon.

I get these pop-ups often from overwrites I initiated previously (since they do not popup until later ) and I am working on other tasks with my keyboard, it is most efficient to quickly enter the commands they require so I can continue my flow of work. When I need to switch to the mouse it is disruptive.

In Windows XP I did not have this problem.

I see now. I just tried this on a 3GB folder and the files were recreated with "Copy" appended to the file name. But I used the same folder. Will do some experiments and get back.

Teracopy is a program which can be used for bulk copying and also synchronising two different folders.

Try this program. The freeware program has almost all the useful features of the professional version.

Using this program different folders can be synchronised without overwriting the files already existing with same size and date.

The speed of Teracopy program was better than Windows XP copy function but is almost same as Windows 7 copy function.

It is worth trying this program on Windows 7 for the extra features like pause and resume of copying, verify with MD5 checksums etc. Download and try the Teracopy 2.2 beta 3.

I have tried your keyboard method and it worked fine for me. It may be your Enter key is bad, it happens. Or one or more of the other shortcut keys you use. It could be dirt too, turn the keyboard over and whack it on a hard surface to dislodge dirt. Try a different one on your PC and try your kkybrd on another PC.

If you have a 3rd party file management program it may conflict with Win7's file manager, but worked with XP.
