trouble with the dvd drive

Thanks for any suggestions.
I just recorded some data on the DVD drive and wanted to check what was written. I left clicked on the DVD drive. A revolving circle came up and never went away. Powered down the computer and brought it back up. Then I right clicked on the DVD drive and it started to check the Library folder????
Running Windows 7 Pro with all the updates on a Dell T3400.
Also running ESET SS Beta 5.
Don't think the drive is faulty. Maybe the program mix on the computer.

Sounds like a bad burn. Have you tried the disc in another machine? Have you tried another disc in your machine?

If that doesn't work, we've been seeing a few issues around here with machines that have the ESET beta installed, including problems with Windows Update errors. Try uninstalling the beta.

Yes I have tried another disk. This time I used Windows to write
the files to the DVD. It said there was an error?

When I go into Windows 7 to check the DVD drive it tells me the drive is working.
My first attempt was with Infarecorder and that failed.
Sometimes after I erase the DVD with Erase DVD, then look at properties to see if the DVD has been erased it shows all zeros.
I have to shut down to computer and start it up again and then looking at properties the correct values show.
I know my explanation is lacking. I am not sure if the problem is with the DVD drive, Windows 7, the mix of programs on the computer, the DVD disks or any combination.

Ah, it's a DVD-RW. Are you using windows to write the disc? Have you tried different software? Google free burning software, and look for one that supports RW. And do try the disc in another machine.

Sorry to bother you with my Headaches Mr. Colbert.
The problem might be solved. Dell is sending me a new DVD Drive. I think it has been failing for several months. The new drive will tell the story. Latest - it won't eject or close the tray.
I tried Imageburn a while back and had to restore my entire computer because of it. Never again. Maybe it's not Infrarecorders fault. We will see.
As a side Windows Media player does not handle data which is the only thing I use a DVD for. At least I couldn't find out how to.
I have tried burning with Windows and I get as far as having windows telling me that I have files to be burnt but for the life of me I can't figure out how to do this.

Got the new DVD drive in.
Running Windows 7 Pro with all the fixins.
Bios is set to read the HD 1st.
If I click on the DVD drive the drive starts blinking and the circle
revolves maybe the next window will come up and maybe it won't.
If it does and I right click on properties lots of time passes
and I might get a window telling everything is zero which is wrong. The auto play is worthless for me as I only use the DVD for
data burning. It might be interfering with this process.
Anyway I'm not getting good results. I suspect Windows and some setting. Have no idea what to do now.....

I burned with the new drive and Properties is giving me fits.
Although the burn said it was successful the DVD showed up with zero.
I think my problem in Windows 7 is the Live movie maker program.
If you have ever tried to uninstall it I sure would like to know how.
I don't do movies on a computer. That's what TVs are for.
How can I get the thing OFF my computer

Apologies for the delay in responding, phenix. Can't say for sure if it's the Live Movie Maker, but it makes sense. Googling reveals that there are issues with uninstalling the Live Essentials programs, but I would try the free Revo Uninstaller.

Also, I am surprised to see you had issues with ImgBurn. I have used this program for many years on both XP and now on Windows 7, and it worked perfectly for me.

Could you maybe explain the problems you found with ImgBurn? I like this program because it has a verify mode, where it immediately cross-checks the data written. I have found many a bad disc due to this.

Thanks guys for taking your time to answer.
Mr. Colbert: Revo uninstaller did not find any Movie Maker.
No Problem because it is disabled with Windows features.
This seemed to help with the DVD drive operation.
Still Movie Maker is a bad program and should be changed to do
a complete uninstall if so desired.

Seeliewight: Most likely it's some dumb thing I did.
I had to reinstall the entire puter after running it. That scared me off.
Backed up and installed Imagburn. It worked like a champ. Took a
little getting used to but I managed. Haven't the foggiest why I
had so much trouble a while back with it. Will now get rid of Infrarecoder
and Eraser. Both are questionable programs.
