Hi everyone, I have just got my previously used Windows 7 pc out of the loft, and I am updating and generally bringing it back to life.

All is well, except that there is a problem with windows updates.
Updates are shown - buttons are pressed and download follows. Following restart - configuration fails and all then reverts:(
Guidance / help would be much appreciated
Thanks in advance
C

Stop the Windows Update service in Services.
Delete all files and subfolders in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.
Restart your PC.
Restart the Windows Update service.
Try Windows Update again.

How much out-of-date is your Windows 7?
Does it contain Service Pack 1?

Thanks Guys - now back so some further information.
flavallee - yes Service pack 1 is present on this installation

George - did as you suggested. Result no change unfortunately.
I have done some further digging, and this morning there were 5 updates available PLUS one optional. Tried to update but was blownout at the configuration stage and PC reverted.

Tried again, this time I did not include the optional update (KB2592687) - all then installed without a hitch and configured correctly.
Then tried to install KB2592687 as an individual update - PC did not attempt to install.
A quick search on the net suggests that there were problems with this specific update, so will dig some more. Have as a temp measure hidden this update for now

Thanks for your input

PS - just noticed that it says 32 bit Home in the left column
This is incorrect, and is now 64 bit Windows 7 Pro

Hi

As a matter of course i never install optional updates, usually more trouble than there worth.

run the MS diskCleaner it now includes a Windows update cleanup tool
then Kb947821,
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20858

If that problem KB has been pulled it should not show up,
ps set WU setting to Never,

Roy

Again my thanks to all for their suggestion etc.

In the end it was Torchwood's post that did the trick. All is now updated and working as it should.
Others taking this route - be warned - Installing hot-fix KB947821 can take an age!!
I will keep in mind the advice not to bother with suggested optional updates.
thanks again
