trying to clone my drive

I'm trying to clone my current drive to a new ssd. Current windows 7 install is on a 232gb hard drive and i want to move it to a 220gb ssd.

running into problems though. Seems the hard drive is messed up any any clone i try to do in macrium just fails at 1% with the error read failed 22- broken pipe.

even tried to do a system image restore from within windows 7 itself after installing it to the ssd but it just gives me an error during that process with no information.

any help?

Try to image it (backup) from the WinPE Rescue CD and then restore it to the new SSD. This seems to have worked for many with that problem. ( Read Richie3000's post dated May 03, 2013 here Macrium Support Forum - Clone Failed - Read Failed 22- Broken Pipe)

Cloning to a smaller drive does not work because a clone is a physical copy of the whole file including all the empty space.

Imaging should work. One option is to download this Macrium WinPE .iso, burn it to a CD and work with that. It will make images and restore images.

macrium says that it does, my problem with the cloning is errors on the source disk.

As whs rightly said you cannot clone - which is a sector to sector one to one copying - a large drive to a small drive. But you can restore an Image of a larger partition to a smaller partition. My post also said use the WINPE Rescue CD to image and restore. WHS has that WINPE ready for you. You need not install Macrium Refelect and create a Win PE Rescue cd. Why are you not listening? And did you read the post in the Macrium Support site I had referred in my post?

After you restore the image if you have problem in booting, you can use the FixBoot feature in the WinPE Rescue CD.That OP had successfully done it. Upto you to take it or leave it. No better advice could be given.

But Intelligent Sector Copy doesn't copy one to one, only whats in use.

I'd start by checking the integrity of your source HDD using Windows or better the manufacturers diagnostic utility.
I agree with the general comments on cloning from a larger to a smaller drive but Macrium does allow a drag & drop feature (is this "smart" cloning?). You could try it. Still I'd probably go down the standard Macrium imaging procedure.

yeah i've been trying do to an image but it keeps failing verification.

going to try saving it to a different hd to see if that works

i gave up trying to to use macrium, both images and cloning kept failing.

used EASEUS Todo Backup Professional 2.5 to do a clone and it finished fine.

though i did have boot problems, windows repair disk wouldn't do anything at all, i used the windows pe usb i made for macrium and it fixed the boot problems with one click. Also had to re-align the drive after cloning, apparently my old hd was at 31k. I used MiniTool Partition Wizard Free to do that.

I am currently typing this from the ssd, everything seems fine (knocks on wood)

Can this be on a usb instead using rufus instead of ImgBurn ?
Also do we/ I really have to install Macrium too thought WinPE did everything ?

Macrium Reflect's Intelligent Copy is used, not in cloning drive-to-drive operations, rather, only for imaging of partitions operations. Yes, within reason, one can restore an full-image of a partition onto a smaller partition -- as long as one makes sure the "exploded [uncompressed]" bytespace is smaller than the target partition.

I always thought this was the case with Macrium. Of course you cannot put more data into a smaller space. It's logical isn't it.
The problem with Windows inbuilt system imaging was that it wanted to replace the MBR which contains the original partition structure in its partition table. If it didn't fit as defined by the partition table regardless of the data on the drive you got a failure. A somewhat smarter program can adjust the MBR partition table appropriately.
