Trying to Enable Autorun

Ok, so I have a very annoying problem. Windows does not want to pop up an Autorun Window for any device no matter what I have set in the control panel. Well I think I have finally figured out the problem. My registry has the setting "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" set as 0x000000FF (255) which I have found out disables Autorun on every device. My problem is I do not know how to change the value, or what to change the value too. If you can tell me how to set the value and what to set it too, that would be really appreciated

Here is a copy of a screenshot of the key that I think is causing my problem, if I am missing any details, please let me know, I will be happy to provide it.

P.S. It didn't do this when I was first using Windows, but it always eventually is set to this value no matter how many times I reformat and reinstall Windows (using Factory Image). I'm guessing my AV program or one of the programs installed on my computer.

Since that is not a default key, you can simply delete it from the registry
If however you'd rather change the value, take the necessary info from here (simply add the HEX values of all lines you'd like to hold true for your installation and use that number) Then I would go with 0x1+0x10+0x80=0x91 (145 decimal) which was the default in Vista.

0x1 Disables AutoPlay on drives of unknown type.
0x4 Disables AutoPlay on removable drives.
0x8 Disables AutoPlay on fixed drives.
0x10 Disables AutoPlay on network drives.
0x20 Disables AutoPlay on CD-ROM drives.
0x40 Disables AutoPlay on RAM drives.
0x80 Disables AutoPlay on drives of unknown type.


0xFF Disables AutoPlay on all types of drives.

Check the key at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
as well. The default value should be 0x00000091 (145), or if you have a floppy drive the default is 0x00000095 (149)

Thanks, but unfortunately I tried that, it didn't work

Edit: Nevermind about is it safe to delete the key. I'm going to assume that since multiple people have said it is, I will. Hope it works!

Edit Again: It works!! Thanks for helping me out guys! For someone with a "Skilled" badge, I should trust others a lot more. I guess I have that curiosity gene in me!

Set that value as 0 or remove it can enable the whole autorun?

yhynerson1: From what I'm getting, deleting it will cause autorun to be enabled in every case, not setting the value to "0". In your situation it looks like your registry wont let auto-play work on network drives and unknown drives.

I have a similar problem with nothing auto-running, but this key doesn't exist in my registry. I just gave up and explore the cds, heh.
