Alright, I'm trying to configure the extender with Media Center on Windows 7. I think I'm getting to the 2nd step where it says it's trying to configure my extender but that is as far as I get.

"Unable to Find Extender".

Not sure if there's an issue with my Network settings. Xbox is connected to the same network as my Windows 7 computer.

This is my first time using Media Center/Xbox 360. Any info is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Still a no go on this.

From reading other posts, others are able to connect their extender with their Windows 7 media center but I am not sure if their extender is an xbox 360.

Thoughts?:(

I am also unable to connect to my xbox360. When media centre is at the "configuring your extender" step my xbox trys to access xbox live. As I do not have this I am unable to proceed.
Do I therefore need an update from Microsoft to use WMC 7? If so how can I install this without live? Media sharing is set up and working fine with Windows 7 and the xbox360.

I have installed vista in a new partition. I am now able to use wmc with my xbox. The xbox says it is reverting to an older program. The problem stems from being unable to go online with my xbox (it's banned).the solutions are to buy a new xbox or to use media player to stream using windows 7.
Unless anyone knows where I can download the windows 7 update for the xbox?

dont believe there is an update for windows 7 media center on the xbox, mine never updated it just connected.

i know this because my internet was disconnected from the computer when i set all of it up for testing.

but if your xbox is banned from xbox live do you have the NXE atleast? that could be the problem.

this is the link for the NXE update, if you dont have it already download it, unzip the files then burn them to the root directory of a cd or dvd, put it in the xbox turn it off and on again and it will automatically update.

Thanks for the reply. I was banned before the update so I will give it a go. Won't I loose the ability to play divx though ( as the update needs reinstallng from xbox live).

I have installed the NXE. However the problem persists!
Again after entering the number into media center there is an error at step 3 ( configuring your extender ). At this point my xbox trys to log onto live, to download some needed file. As I am banned an error occurs at this point.

If you were not online when you set up media centre you must have downloaded this file at some other point. So unless I can get this update no mce7 . Unfortunatly I need to keep my dual boot to use Vista.

Any further suggestions, thanks.

Banned How?

Your live account should be banned not your actual x360 hardware unless its modded but I'm not aware of way MS could track that through live other than its usual banning practices.

If its just your gamer tag banned, then setup a new one using a Live silver account. Its free and should let you access some basic live stuff. For your MC, ask it to setup a new connection which should bring you to the coded number to input in your PC MC. I had trouble at first because the network was detected fine but it was not as seamless as the previous x360 dashboard.

I like the newer media center look and with my PC HD tuner, I can easily stream HD content without a problem as well as other media buried on my HD.

by the sounds of it his xbox is banned so he must of modded it at one point or another and that means itll be banned for life. almost makes me think the mod is screwing it up lol because i know i never downloaded something on my xbox to connect to media center after i upgraded to windows 7, that was literally one of the first things i tested.

What is the point of owning this technology if I can't f}£k with it!
There is however a solution, using my dual partition setup vista works just fine with my xbox. I have also set up windows 7 to stream and transcode video using Tversity.
Also try Orb, it does a great job steaming everthing including live/recorded TV to my Iphone.

i see what your talking about now... it doesnt need to connect to live to update though... you just need to make sure the xbox has a valid ip address so it can set up the media center application...

goto the console settings goto computers disconnect from them.. then goto media center on the xbox get the code goto the next screen, start media center on the computer add extender type in the code and your all set.

i did this all without being on the internet so i know you do not have to download any updates to connect. your just having an issue with your dhcp server giving your xbox an ip address which is needed to set up the connection

thanks for the tip. However it looks like I am flogging a dead horse here. Once again media centre configs pc, searches for extender then at step 3 trips up. As the pc attempts to config the extender the xbox once more trys and fails to go on live to allow a "needed update for this software"
This is not going to work.
Thanks anyway everyone.

I still can't get this to work and it's beginning to frustrate me.

In WMC, I click Add Extender, plug in the 8 digit key, click Next, if fails at step 2 (Searching for your extender). I don't understand why, my Xbox is on the same network as this PC that I'm trying to configure WMC on. It tells me it's unable to find the extender.

Am I supposed to open up a specific port to allow communication from my PC to the Xbox? If so, how do I, specifically, open up certain ports without having to configure a specific program? Thanks.

are you directly connected or through a router? there are ports you need to open but in windows they are usually automatically opened in the windows firewall unless your running another...
heres a list of the ports..

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/mediacenter/firewall.mspx

oh yeah running the media center network test on the 360 can also be a big help, try running that after making sure your ports are open in the firewall if it still wont connect and it could give you an idea of what to look for...

I'm going through a wireless router. I enabled the Media Center Extender through the windows firewall, no luck. I then tested the Windows Media Center setup in Xbox and it just tells me my console isn't connected to a windows media center pc. The test obviously makes it to my router but then can't hit my windows media center pc. Incoming ports are opened, what gives?

have you tried disconnecting from all computers in the xbox settings blade and restarting the whole process?

is the xbox connecting via wireless or is the computer or both?

i know this sounds kinda obvious but iv made the mistake before... once the xbox gives you the code make sure you hit next to goto the next screen while it waits for the connection
