I just downloaded the AVG tuneup program and it was a disaster. It slowed me down a lot. Is there any of the reg. cleaner tuneup programs out there that works and is easy to use and understand by us novices users? I am using win 7 64 bit. home premium edition.

There are large numbers of such programs available but there is not one I would use or recommend. They tend to include functions that are marginally useful, functions that Windows already has, along with those that are potentially dangerous. They fall far short of fulfilling the promises they make. Many contain malware.

I have had bad experiences with these programs in the past and at present have no interest in them.

Best way to Tune-up Windows is disable unneeded programs from startup (not updaters, those are important), cleanup using 'Ccleaner' and 'Disk Cleanup' and not install random junk, also do not install malware :).

Never use Registry Cleaners, most to all will break something.

For a good list of tasks you can do to make your system behave better:
Optimize Windows 7 - Windows 7 Help Forums
Do note, those are just 'suggestions', you do not have to follow all of them.

Have a good day ^^.

Hi,
There's allot of good reasons not use a tuneup utility and none to use one,

If really having issues just clean install windows,
Chances are if you use a tuneup utility you'll be doing that anyway as you've found out using avg tuneup.. ;)
Cheers.

OK, I did the suggestions that was in the Richc46 post and loaded this.
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/
On the page it had the scan again and I did it. It run for more then 48 hours and never finished. I like the idea that it could update everything but don't think it works. As far ad the ccleaner I guess it works, I don't know. Should I have loaded this stuff? I just know if I keep doing nothing it will in time bluescreen again and cost another 200 bucks to get it fixed and not be right again. The problem is my daughter and wife does taxes and the church stuff and we can't loose the stuff that is on the machine and he says that we need to format to get a clean install but that just can't happen.

I use all the software that I suggested and do not have a problem. I suggest that if you freeze when using the software, you try to find the cause before using the software again. Once your computer is working properly, I suggest using once a week.

You can try to repair by using a repair install. Your stuff should be safe, but nothing can be guaranteed.

Who is "he"?

If you can't afford to lose stuff, then back it up to some other drive, probably external.

CCleaner is an excellent program and "works", but it is more of a cleaning application designed to de-clutter your PC. It isn't a "tuning" application. You don't need tuning applications.

"Should I have loaded this stuff?". What stuff? You should UNLOAD (uninstall) any so-called tuning applications.

If you have specific problems, deal with them individually by starting a thread in the appropriate section of this forum.
