two cd icons in system tray

Hi all

Following the latest windows update (possibly a coincidence) I now have two instances of my cd drive showing in the notification area.

These relate to the Vaio power management.

I did think that it might be a cache problem so I ran the icon cache clearer found here

But after a reboot they are both back. In the task manager there are two instances of SPMgr.exe

Any suggestions.

A couple of reboots later and after no action on my behalf the problem resolved itself.

Was just going to reply, but see the issue is resolved.
Glad to hear it.

I suggest you make sure you have system restore enabled so you can back out changes if needed going forward.
Better yet, create System backup images so you can restore your system if needed.

Whoopsi- spoke too soon.

Another couple of reboots and the two icons are back.

I appreciate that I can do a system restore but I would rather understand why I have this intermittent problem...

Hello again, bummer the problem returned...

Can you kill one of the SPMgr.exe instances in Task Manager?
If so, does that remove the duplicate icon?

Look in msconfig/startup to see if there are two entries for SPMgr.exe.
If there are two, disable one and re-boot.

You can also download and run Sysinternals/Autoruns and look for multiple occurances of SPMgr.exe.
Sysinternals Utilities
If you find more than one you can disable it in Autoruns, and re-boot.
Autoruns has a lot more info than msconfig/startup...

Hi David thanks for the prompt reply.

I though that I had already looked in Sysinternals yesterday. Never-the-less I can now find 3 instances of spmgr.exe that all point to C:\program files\sony\vaio power management

I also noticed more than one instance of the Vaio battery care so I decide to export the file as a txt file. On opening the txt file, the 3 instances of spmgr.exe are listed as the following:

+ \SONY\SUS-BCF\Level4Month WBCBatteryCare Sony Corporation c:\program files (x86)\sony\setting utility series\wbcbatterycare.exe
+ \SONY\VAIO Power Management\VPM Logon Start SPM Module Sony Corporation c:\program files\sony\vaio power management\spmgr.exe
+ \SONY\VAIO Power Management\VPM Session Change SPM Module Sony Corporation c:\program files\sony\vaio power management\spmgr.exe
+ \SONY\VAIO Power Management\VPM Unlock SPM Module Sony Corporation c:\program files\sony\vaio power management\spmgr.exe

Each of the duplicates point to the same files even though the autoruns text file lists them as being in different states, should i still delete them? Ordinarily I do but had never saved autoruns as a text file before (and thus never noticed the different states before).

I would NOT delete anything for starters.

I would UNCHECK all but one of the startup instances of spmgr.exe.
Re-Boot, and see if the issue is resolved.

I've never had a problem by disabling things in Autoruns, so you should be able to re-enable anything you disable if you have problems.

I also use System Backup Images, so that gives me an "extra comfort level" for making system changes...

I really don't think you will have problems disabling these items in Autoruns...
