Unable to access files copied from Vista on windows 7

I backed up all my files on an external hard drive before I upgraded to windows 7 from Vista, and im trying to copy the files from my external hard drive back on to my laptop and it just doesn't work.

I'm getting the following error message... "you need permission to perform this action,you require permission from administratos to make changes to this file"

Now I have tried...

running net user administrator /active:yes

turning off the UAC,

Changing the folder permissions to allow mysef access etc... as per this website... Fix “You need permission to perform this action” error

Some of the folders im trying to copy are written in green, I think i may of tried to make these folders private or something a few years back, as the other folders seem to copy fine...

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated as I desperately need access to these files...

If you added an ACL to those files you had originally on your vista machine the SID is lost and the new machine won't recognize ownership or "admin" account(s).

Yes, you always have options. I didn't for it to sound like you're up * creek without a paddle. You might need to slave the drive to a working OS in order to attempt associating an active ACL list or SID to the files... THEN you'll need to make sure that the "everyone" group has FULL control on those Folders and that you have the subfolders/files set to inherit that 'everyone' group.


*disclaimer* If you had set a single person as access to those files 'ONLY' and set the special permissions to DENY new ownership from being taken on these folders/subfolders/files, then yes, there is nothing you can do without that original vista OS.

the files won't copy accross after adding the security rights, and the operating system (vista) has been overwritten by 7 so i guess theres nothing i can do.....

FFS i've just lost 5yrs worth of pictures

Take ownership of the files/folder/drive that you are trying to access...

well here's the good news. If you have permission to modify the ACL or "security" tab on the folders... then you'll have permissions eventually to move these pictures. We'll just have to try something else at this point.

Can you provide a screen shot of your "Security" tab and "Advanced" options under security please?

Please find attached screenshots... The current account im using on windows 7 is the one named user, the account unknown must be from windows vista, it actually allowed me to take ownership but still same message when trying to copy...

Ok first thing I would do is add the "everyone" group. So in your first screen shot you'll notice that you have "user" selected. This is still a singular value if i'm not mistaken. On that first screen, click Edit. Then type in "Everyone" then click check names. This should underline the "everyone" group and allow you to click ok. This should then allow you select what level of access to give this group. Select "Full Control". Then on the 2nd screenshot you have, click the "owner" tab and see how's listed as the current owner. If the Owner of this folder is the unassociated SID You'll need to replace that owner with a relevant user (preferably your account)

After you do this you'll need to force inherit to all child objects which I can explain later if the everyone group permissions work.

I managed to do all of that, apart from the inheritible permissions as I didn't know how to do that...

and its still coming up with the same message.
