Unable to do a repair install with my Win 7 DVD

So I installed Win 7 x64 on my upgraded PC and since then started having problems with installing SP 1. Refer to thread http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...it-sp-1-installation-error-code-800f0818.html

I am still talking to Tom on this but wanted to check the option to do a repair installation if nothing works, but when I run SetUp on my Win 7 x64 DVD, it gets me to the disk selection menu from where I need to select the drive I want to install windows in.

Why is it not giving me the option to upgrade and do a repair installation?

you would need to select the install type in the very first screen, Custom or Upgrade. the repair has to be started from within w7 too.

Thanks for your response

I tried running the Set up from within win 7 and right after I run it, it goes on full screen mode then follows the path as shown

Copying Temporary Files > Setup is starting > Accept Agreement > Select Partition

I don't get the options to Update and Upgrade within the small blue window as shown in the Repair Install tutorial.

Btw, mine is a Retail DVD of Win 7

Ya that's what I saw everywhere....but it doesn't work this way for me

For me it's straight to set up and then select partition

How can Windows 7 act different for different users?

You might try some other options in the tutorial for download the w7SP1 for you current version and try to either use it from a USB stick or burn the image to a new DVD.

Could you please advise me on which should be the right one for me? I am running Win 7 Professional 64 Bit without SP1

Can I go with the Windows 7 Professional x64 RTM one?

Yes that should be fine . It doesn't have SP1 .

It's OK if you want to go through the 200+updates with no SP1.

You should have never installed using a pre-SP1 disk anyway, not when the latest is easily available. There are likely many other tips and tools you missed so I'd do it over using the latest official installer with SP1 provided in Step 1 of Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to reinstall now following the steps to get a perfect install. The steps are the same for retail.

Yes it was a mistake on my part to install the Pre-SP1 version of Win 7

Anyways, I am now downloading the Windows 7 Professional x64 SP1 U (media refresh) edition and will make a clean install with it.

My existing Win 7 Pro key will work with this, right?

Yes, as long as it's a legit retail or factory preinstalled OEM WIn7 key then it will activate.

If you follow the steps in the tutorial based on thousands of installs we've helped with here, you'll get and keep a perfect Win7 install as long as you do.

My key is of a retail edition and has been successfully validated by MS as "Genuine Windows". So ideally it should work.

Finally made a clean install with Win 7 Pro SP1 included..phew!

Now installing apps.

Be sure to install all rounds of IMportant and Optional Updates, after enabling Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3).

Once all rounds are done with restarts, check Device manager for any missing Drivers.
