Unable to install window updates

A friend recently gave her desktop to my kids to use. She told me that it may have a virus. I have been trying unsuccessfully to install windows update. I receive error code 80070308. Today, I received a message window saying that there is a .net frame work file missing due to some harmful virus. Debug malware error 895-system 32.exe failure. I also received a message window that said BSOD: Error 333 Registry Failure of operating system-Host:BLUE SCREEN ERROR 0x000000CE. It also included a phone number to contact someone. I called and they basically told me that I had a virus and that for $249 they could help me fix my computer. I am on a fixed income and unable to afford that but having a computer is a very helpful tool for my kids schoolwork. I am unable to include the CBS zip file because it is 15MB.

That phone number is part of your infection. It's a scam.
Don't call again and don't send money or let them to remote access your computer.

If this was my computer this is what I would do.

1. Scan with my anti virus program/MSE in my case.

2. Scan with Malwarebytes.

3. Scan with Super Anti Spyware.

4. Scan with AdwCleaner

5. Then finish off with the free Eset Online scan. This one will take some time.

6. After removing all the garbage that was found I would do a
sfc /scannow.

Thank you for all your help. I have completed the first 4 steps, but when I ran the Eset online scan it only found a few threats. I also ran Spyhunter4 and it found 910 threats, but before they will fix this I need to purchase the full version. Please advise.

Spyhunter4 finding that many things after you run the other scan to me is also a con game.

No way did those other scan programs I listed miss that many threats.

Could you tell us what anti virus program you usually have installed on your system.

Your could also run Malwarebytes again and make sure your setting are like this.
Remove Spyhunter4
Spyhunter4 probably left some garbage behind.

Please don't download any new programs until you ask first. We could go in circles forever trying to get and keep the garbage off your computer.

I believe that I have Microsoft Security Essentials. I completed the first 4 steps and I will not download any other programs.

1. Scan with my anti virus program/MSE in my case.

Sorry for the delay in response. Yes, I did scan with Malwarebytes after I removed Spyhunter. I am unable to do a sfc/scannow it says that I must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility.

I right clicked on the command prompt and clicked on Run as Administrator. It is now beginning a system scan. Was that correct?

You can get a iso to reinstall windows with for free all you really need is the activation key that is on the case of the computer also stating what os is installed from the factory.

I ran sfc/scannow. Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. I also ran sfc/verifyonly. Windows Resource Protection found integrity violations.

As Thrash said if this was a gifted machine and you have no files/personal data on there it may just be easier to wipe the HDD and reinstall windows to give you a fresh slate to start from.

This is only an option if your machine has a windows OEM sticker on it somewhere with a legible activation key/code

Does the windows OEM sticker have to be from the computer I am having issues with? Or can I use the sticker from another computer system.

The OEM needs to relate to the PC.
In short the Key is married to the Mac address of the hardware.

You can use Produkey or Keyfinder or Magical jelly bean to extract your key before re install.

If you recieved this as a gift and info on the PC of past user, it's best to do a re-installation of the OS. If this for the eMachines ET1831 it may have a factory recovery HDD part. to restore the PC back to the factory setting. No need for a CD or Windows Key. If it's not for the eMachine you can check and see if their is a Recovery part. on the HDD. Go to Admin Tools and select create Part. / Defrag to open up the Disk Manager and in will show all the Part. on the HDD even if it's hidden. Part. will be Labeled "RECOVERY" and files can not be edited on the Part. unless you know how to explore it. To reset to factory build you need to press the function key to start the program. Note: If Windows 10 FREE Upgrade was installed and the 30 days test limit has been reached the function keys will not work. However you may still be able to get it to start by setting the Part. to active. I had to do this with my HP 110 mini to remove Windows 10 after the 30 days trial ended and decided to return to Windows 7 Starter. It booted up to factory reset menu without having to press any keys to start it. Then just select the option to restore to factory. All info on the HDD will be removed except for the "RECOVERY" Part. and a fresh installation of the OS and any OEM programs will be installed. NO Windows Key needed it's built into the OEM RECOVERY files.

NOTE: Setting the Recovery Part. on HDD to active will make BIOS look only at that Part. for boot files. If it does not find a bootable file your system will not be bootable using the HDD as before. Other boot media and software will be needed, to reset the HDD active Part. without removing it.

Suggestion: If the factory RECOVERY of OS is successful, preform only the update functions before Web surfing and make a recovery image file for later use. Do this after all current Updates have been installed, as the time to re-install them take almost a day. Image should be saved on the "RECOVERY" Part. if room or outside USB drive or other media able to hold the files.

A start-up recovery cd will be needed, but can be made later from any PC using the same OS as one being asked t be restore.

I recommend making the Image with only the drivers and OS installed, not with any additional programs. Space needed for image of Windows 7 PRO 64 bits with updates 25 Gigs.

Fresh installations and updates

Fresh installations take less than 30 mins for Windows 7 OS, but the updates can take a day to finish. MS lack of building a Service pack 2 has created a big problem for many preforming fresh installations. Without a SP2 for Windows 7 the load on the update server is being overload with request. Thoust creating an overload demand currently on the server for updates. Current time to receive all the updates can take 24 hours.

Received "Update agent 320" then updater recieved 3,300,000 bits. reboot request not ask for but dne and another 10,000,000 received and reboot show edit of 44 reg on re-boot after 2:22 mins updater shows 208 updates available 90,000 sent 211,000,00 received. updates available 208 @ 634 MB.

Time to download the 208 files 3:45 from the start of request 15,000,000 sent 518,000,000 recieved an not request to re-boot on OS but noted on the "start" button. Updater after installations reports 93 updates installed 115 failed, re-boot request.

Update request to check for updates 15,000,000 bit sent 548,000,000 received. updates preformed on after re-booting 1 update received 19,000 sent 181,000 received and re-boot.

1:35 mins. into reboot and checking for updates still on going OS request to re-boot for updates.
