Unable to see video on Windows Media Player

When trying to play videos recorded from my digital camera, all I get is sound. No video shows. I had no problems on my previous operating system. Can anyone provide me with some insight?

What's the extention on your videos? Have you downloaded Shark007's Codecs?

That can have problems with syncing audio + video. Use a dedicated codec.

Thanks, I downloaded the codecs, but still all I get is a still picture and sound, but no video. Also, Windows Media Center opens and plays sound but the screen is all black.

Do I have to change the settings in the Settings Application of the codecs to fix this?
Please help!!

A. Filling in your System Specs on your User Control Panel, and
B. Tell us what the make and model of your camera is.

Okay, I filled in as much as I could semi-understand.

I don't know what it means if my drivers are up to date, sorry.

Also, I've realized that its not just files from the camera that aren't playing. No video clips/files will work. Such as ones received in e-mail, etc. Windows Media Center is completely useless right now.

It all worked before Windows 7, however my dad went ahead and tried to download it himself (improperly) and now I'm stuck trying to fix everything. (This is my parent's computer)

Okay, I did this, but .wmv files received by e-mail still come up in Windows Media Player and don't work. Are there certain settings in the Settings Application that I have to change? Sorry, I'm not good at figuring those things out.

-Also, video files saved on my computer are in .mov format but still come up in Windows Media Player. Do I have to somehow change the default player?

If this was my system, and I was having these problems, I would do a Repair Install. That would fix all of the issues in one swoop.

The one question I have is this: What did you mean by "... my dad went ahead and tried to download it himself ..." Is this version of Seven an official release, or is this version from a hacker site? If its the latter, you may have a bad version, and no amount of repair installs will fix it. If its a legitimate copy then the repair install should solve the problems.

It's an official release, but they had Windows XP so I had to do a backup and custom installation, which he did not do, so they lost everything.

I don't have a DVD though, it was bought online so I only have the product key

Does anyone know how to make Media Player Classic my default media player? If I could do this my problems would be solved.

Sure, it's my default video player too (I love it) (I use Aimp2 for music though). Btw, you should use the Home Cinema version of MPC which, I believe, is updated more frequently, and use one of the recent beta versions as they are all super stable, ime anyway. Here's the link to where you can download MPC-HC beta versions. They are updated almost daily, so I just update every couple of weeks or so. It's super easy cause they allow you to install a new version over the older version and to retain all your settings and customizations.

Anyway, to make MPC the default player, open MPC or MPC-HC, and hit O which will open the options menu, then open the "formats" tab on the left, and check the boxes for each and every file type you want MPC to be the default player for. Hit OK and/or apply and that's it. After that, when you click on those file types you checked off, MPC will automatically open and (hopefully) start playing them.

A short cut is to look below the file extensions box in the same Formats dialog and just click the Video tab and hit OK and/or apply and that should take care of it for you.

That would work, but I've found all you need is ffdshow tryouts - the latest 32-bit beta will suffice, and its frequently updated. Use the Haali Media Splitter if you need to for mkv files. Reboot, double click on the file and choose windows media player - ignore the warning about any extension files that won't work, and clear the box if you want.

Virtually all codec packs use ffdshow at their heart. As for the player, WMP will work. Uninstall any other codec packs if you have any installed. You can then adjust the settings in ffdshow if necessary to get a picture.

Frostmourne, sorry I don't know what ffdshow is or the Haali Media Splitter. My WMP is completely messed. Nothing shows up so I'm not sure if that will work, which is why I was wondering how to make MPC default. I already have it and Shark007's codec pack so I might as well stick to that instead of downloading more stuff. Thanks for your advice! It is much appreciated.
