I have been trying to solve this problem for 2 days with no luck. Every thing else is able to access the internet and update except MSE and Windows Updates, code 80072efd.
1. Tried M/S site and did everything I could find.
2. Tried running M/S Fix tool and I get the same code for that 80072efd.
3. Ran sfc /scannow many times.
4. Tried 2 different restore points, unable to get restore to work.
5. Ran complete scans with MSE, MBAM, SAS. and found nothing.
6. Ran Disk Clean Up.
7. Ran CCleaner clean up.
8. Set built in firewall to default
I did find this NetPres-Out-TCP invalid firewall rules.
Repaired that with CCleaner.
Can anybody think of anything else to check. Is their something I should do before a repair and install?

Thanks for getting back to me. I have did those sites yesterday but I did them again with no help. I have also removed MBAM and SAS just for a test, no help. I have run update trouble shoot and I recieved; (the remove device or resource won't accept the connection). This was done with my DSL modem only, no router. I have also ran the M/S scan on line. I forget the name but it's the one that removes it's self after 10 days. I would really like to find out what caused this so it may help others. I going to try some other things just to try to find out what happened.
Thanks again for your reply.

I did as you recommended and emailed M/S.
I also removed MSE and download/installed it again. It installed and updated with no problems. I closed MSE and reopened it again. It will not check for updates just like before with same code. I can receive updates using Belarc Advisor. My problem must be a tough one; only you are offering any help. I'm going to put MBAM and SAS back on my computer. I will get back with updates.
Thanks for your help.

The error message translates as ERROR_INTERNET_CANNOT_CONNECT - so it's a 'simple' case of the two computers not being able to find each other.
In view of the fact that you say that the initial update of the fresh install of MSE worked OK, I suspect that one of two things is happening.
1) You have a transparent proxy which is mis-directing normal updates - this may be malware.
or
2) a firewall rule blocking MSE updates.

Since MSE updates are part of the Windows Updates system, what settings are you using for WU?

What firewall are you using?
When was the last time you scanned the system with an up-to-date malware scanner? (what found infections have there been recently?)

Thanks for your concern. I'm sorry I have been gone so long; had a little health problems. I haven't use the computer sense my last post. I removed the firewall before my health problem and still had the problem. Today Windows Updates and MSE updated properly and I have no idea why. Before my last post I run many antimaleware and antispyware along with MSE. No problems found.

Seems like it was a transient problem with (possibly) DNS, then.
Keep an eye on it over the next few days (at least until Wednesday next week - the next scheduled Windows updates are due out then) and see what happens.

Back again with code 80072efd on two computers. I have used Fixit from M/S with no help. I have tried it with and without the router, both computers are hard wired to the router no help. I use Windows 7 firewall both set at default. At the present time my other computer is searching Windows Updates for 20 min. with no codes and no results. Every thing else updates and works as it should. All I get when emailing M/S is a we got your request. I have ran sfc /scannow several times with no help, no problems found. I have scanned with my normal security program, they all say I'm clean on both computers. Now after just rebooting my other computer I get code 80072efd again.I have switched my home page on I.E. 9 to msn.com. and I get the same results. I have checked again and both computers have the genuine logo. Times in bios and operating system are correct. Their is only one account on both computers, me as admin.

What happens if you attempt to manually download the file referenced in your report above?
http://download.microsoft.com/v9/windowsupdate/redir/muv4wuredir.cab
It's actually an XML file in a compressed format, and it's possible that if you have anti-malware programs running, they are seeing this as an attempt at a hijack, and blocking the download and processing of the file.

What AV's have ever been installed on this machine (these machines) - residuals can affect the OS long after the main program has been uninstalled, so it's always best to uninstall the conventional way, and then run the manufacturer's manual removal/cleanup tool as well.

Thank you both for your help. I found a email from M/S in my junk mail dated Jan 19 2012. It sure took a long time for them to help. The answer was in there. I can now update Windows and MSE using Windows Updates. I can not MSE by itself. Here was the fix on both computers.
How both computers had the same problem at the same time is puzzling. I will be watching to see if stays fixed and get back to you two.

Once again on my new computer, My System Specs has had the same problem. The other computer is still okay. I don't know what is causing the problem. I fixed it again using M/S instruction. I will keep you all posted.

Let's look a a couple of things.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here http://screen317.spywareinfoforum.org/SecurityCheck.exe or here http://screen317.changelog.fr/SecurityCheck.exe
Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt.
Please post the contents of that document.

and then download VEW by Vino Rosso http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your desktop

Double click it to start it Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 you will need to right click the file and select Run as administrator and click Continue or Allow at the User Account Control Prompt.

Click the check boxes next to Application and System located under Select log to query on the upper left

Under Select type to list on the right click the boxes next to Error and Warning Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 also click the box next to Critical (not XP).

Under Number or date of events select Number of events and type 20 in the box next to 1 to 20 and click Run

Once it finishes it will display a log file in notepad
Please copy and paste its entire contents into your next reply

I'll ask again (in a slightly different way) -
What other Security software has EVER been installed on this PC since the last reformat/reinstall? - including any AV supplied by the manufacturer but never activated.
This includes AV, FireWall, Ant-Malware, etc...

Well I missed that sorry! The only anti virus that has ever been on this computer is MSE.
The only other security programs I had and have on this computer is MAM and SAS until Jacee's post. The only firewall has been built in Windows 7 firewall. Yes you are correct those 3rd party programs are very difficult to remove. I have been there and done that on other computers.
