unable to upgrade from home premium to ultimate

My main PC has been running Home premium 64 bits for a few months successfully (activated and does updates) and I now want to upgrade it to Ultimate 64 bits.
I ran MGADiag on the Home Premium system and it reported it was a retail version;

I have bought a sealed version of Ultimate with both 32 and 64 bit DVDs inside. However when trying to put in the Ultimate product key from the System page, either using "Get more features with a new edition of Windows 7" or "Change product key" I get the error message
"The upgrade key you have entered is for an edition of Windows that does not work with Windows Anytime Upgrade. Enter a different upgrade key"

The Ultimate DVDs I have say on them "Includes Windows Anytime Upgrade" When I used them to make an install to another PC to test all worked okay and it activated and did updates.

However the DVDs are all black and don't have the golden hologram around the disc edge as I expected them to have.

Can anyone throw some light on this please. Are these discs genuine or how else can I check?

The Product Key that you have there is not an "Anytime Upgrade" Product Key. You have to perform the Upgrade installation by putting the DVD in the drive and clicking "Upgrade". This is completely separate and unrelated to the Anytime Upgrade.

The Anytime Upgrade is completely different because that type of Product Key is only obtained by opening the Windows Anytime Upgrade program that's included with specific editions of Windows 7 (such as Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, and I think maybe even Home Basic as well), and then going ahead and purchasing an Anytime Upgrade product key. This is nice because then you don't need an installation DVD.

To see what I'm talking about, open the Start Menu, type anytime and press Enter. This is how you obtain a Product Key that works with the Windows Anytime Upgrade process. So what you have to do since you have an actual retail copy is you have to insert the DVD, and then click "Upgrade" when you see the prompt come up. Again, it's completely separate and unrelated to the Anytime Upgrade. In other words, you have to do it "the old-fashioned way".

Ok and thanks for your reply.
When I run the DVD it just says "Install" rather than give me the choice of a new install or upgrade. I am nervous going any further in case it does a full install and wipes all my installation. Should I just carry on and it'll ask me upgrade/full install later on through the process?

I must very strongly disagree. This is absolutely completely wrong information.

OP's issue is not that Anytime Upgrade does not work, but that he is trying to do it in a wrong way. I have personally done Windows Anytime Upgrade several times upgrading a Home Premium with a retail product key from a normal full retail box of Windows 7 Ultimate.

Anytime upgrade does not work the way the OP has tried:

Instead you simply start Anytime Upgrade from Start Menu, enter the product key and that's it. Anytime Upgrade is not available in all countries but as OP lives in a country where it is available, it really is this easy.

Okay so I just tried it by the method suggested by Kari and I get the same error message "...enter a differnt upgrade key."

Yeah, you have to click that button first. After that, you'll be presented with more options. Eventually, you will get to a prompt that offers "Upgrade" and "Custom (advanced)".

Simple answer...yes I did. I uninstalled that installation before I tried to upgrade but I guess you are saying that MS won't accept the upgrade now. As it's a retail disc so I am entitled to install it wherever I want (but just on one PC at a time) will it mean I need to cajole MS into accepting it for upgrade? In which case how do I do that?

Also does the fact the DVDs dont have the gold hologram make them dubious?

Why not just do the old style Upgrade? When it comes time to activate, activate by phone.

Well this is my main PC and I don't want to screw it up considering the time I've spent getting it the way I want. Will make a new backup and perhaps try at the weekend. But I'm also curious as to why the discs dont have the hologram Is that normal?

I can understand Dave to a certain point, anytime is so bloody easy. If it does not work then this is of course the next best alternative.

For future reference a few facts about the Windows 7 Product Keys.
  • With an Upgrade key you can activate:
    • A clean install over existing Windows
    • An in-place upgrade over existing Windows
    • An Anytime Upgrade
  • With a Full Retail key you can activate
    • A clean install on a PC without any previous OS
    • A clean install over existing Windows
    • An in-place upgrade over existing Windows
    • An Anytime Upgrade
Product keys are edition but not language specific. A Product Key from English Windows 7 Ultimate Retail Box can activate an in-place upgraded Spanish Ultimate.

I've uninstalled the product key on the second pc and will give it a while for it to ""phone home" and report to its masters. Hopefully then I will be able to anytime update. If not I'll come running back here.

Where did I buy it? I'll give you one quess. Begins with e and ends in Bay.
It was sealed, the seller has loads of 100% positive feedback....but its still a black dvd and I didnt see anything dodgy in what MGADiag reported. Perhaps those with more knowledge of MGADiag than me can comment.

Then you need to obtain a genuine copy. Don't trust ANYTHING from the Bay. 100% positive feedback for a seller doesn't mean anything to me because it's the Bay! There's a reason it's called The Pirate Bay.

OK, let us know how it went.

If Anytime Upgrade does not work, you need to upgrade by doing a clean install. In-place upgrade in Windows 7 is allowed only in these two cases:
  • Upgrading from Vista to equal or better edition of 7
  • Repair install, in-place upgrade 7 with the same edition
What this means is that your current Home Premium could be repaired doing a so called in-place upgrade installation with Home Premium install media. However, if you want to upgrade to a better edition of 7, only options are Anytime Upgrade or clean install.

Once again, this is so important: You can of course upgrade to Ultimate from Home Premium. If you want to keep your installed applications and files intact, you have to do Anytime Upgrade. If you cannot do Anytime Upgrade, your only option is to upgrade by doing a clean install and thereafter reinstall all your applications, as you will lose them.

More:
If you end upgrading using the DVD, remember you cannot select Upgrade as wrongly told earlier in this thread. Instead you need to select Custom Install and follow instructions on screen.

I understand what you are saying but I think that's a bit too general. I sell sometimes on ebay and believe me I would never scam anyone. But I'm not gullable either.;)
I'd still like to hear from someone who can definitely say all genuine DVDs have the gold hologram ...or otherwise .

I thought you meant The Pirate Bay. I have never paid any attention to them, so I thought that they started having sellers on there or something. I was very confused.

Anyway, now that I know its eBay, I have one question about this DVD: what is written or printed on this black label?
