Unable to use Windows partitions in Ubuntu

Dear All,

I am using VMWare Workstation 6.5.3 in my Windows 7. I have set up Ubuntu Linux as a virtual machine & added the partitions (NTFS) from my existing physical disk via Add disc in VM settings window. Problem is
though they are visible in Ubuntu but when i try to open them i get the below authentication window..

"troy007" is my user id in ubuntu.

in spite of typing the correct password, i get the below error message

Nothing happens on clicking "Retry" or "Continue" & if i click "Abort", the ubuntu session gets disconnected.

Wats wrong?? Plz help.

Are your permissions set correctly in windows?
That's what it sounds like isn't working right.

ya that might be the problem...plz guide me as to how I can check the existing permission & what needs to be modified so that i can access from Ubuntu?

That is tricky - we first need to know *which* partitions you're trying to access, and whether your W7 was a clean install or an upgrade. Also, did you create all partitions when installing W7 or were some carried over from previous installs of W7 / Vista / XP?

i want to access all the partitions (its ok if i cannot access C:\ where win7 is)....my Windows 7 was a clean install..no i did not create all partitions when installing Windows 7, they were carried over from previous install of Vista.

It definitely sounds like permissions issues. What you'll need to do is take a look at both the permissions allowed as well as the ownership of the partitions you carried over.

Check out http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/24232-sharing-permissions.html and possibly http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1911-take-ownership-shortcut.html (to make it easier on you).

DO NOT TAKE OWNERSHIP OF C: - you'll effectively defeat the restrictions set by the OS on Program Files and other protected resources, making your computer more vulnerable to attack. The same applies for any system created folders on other drives.

IOW, when you need to use take ownership or adjust the permissions, be sure to do it on a folder by folder basis - just about every physical drive or partition will have a System Restore folder as well as a recycle bin folder that you should not take ownership of nor adjust permissions for - so, trying to save time and doing these tasks for the whole drive may, in effect, render those folders useless to Windows.

tried both the boththe permissions allowed and the ownership shortcut as per the tutorials..but none worked out & now i am getting the continue, retry, abort message before i can login to ubuntu...as usual nothing happens on clicking retry or continue....so i have to click abort & that ends my ubuntu session

Good thing about VMs is - 1) Snapshots, and 2) They are virtual, so it is easy to wipe them away and start over.

I have a feeling something is missing, but I haven't tried sharing my W7 partitions with any VM yet, so I am not sure what is going on. I suggest you do a bit of searching over that he Ubuntu forums too, as you may have greater luck in finding the answer (such as something that you have to enable when installing Ubuntu in order to correctly read W7 partitions).

Okay, sorry about the length before my replay.
I am running in a domain environment but the only difference is that my permissions are slightly different.

Go to My Computer>
Right click the drive you want to share>
Properties>
Sharing>
Advanced sharing button(note you need local admin priv.)>
Click "Share this folder">
Permissions>
Add button>
Type the name of the user you want to be able to access the share.>
Save and apply all the way back to the my computer screen.

Log-in into ubuntu>
Navigate to the computer via the method of your choice.>
When you try to access the computer, it will ask for an user name ans password.>
Input the user name you want to use>
Then okay, After that your share should appear.>
Open the share and it should ask for the user name and password again.>
Input again>
You should see the shared partion/drive/folder ' listing.

i followed the steps..after i logged in to ubuntu, i navigated to the shared folder..i was able to see it's contents...it did not prompt me for any id/pwd...then i started to play a mp3...it started running...but after 10 secs or so..again that notorious message of retry,continue, abort came
may be i shud delete the exiting vm & try afresh...thanks for ur help though.

Can you open, modify, and save documents?

Did you tell it to save your credentials?

I may of went back to read more of the track and it denied because the credentials were not saved.

hey mate..it seems to be a prob with Windows 7...i tried some other flavor of linux & when i clicked on my drive icon..it said "cannot mount the volume Linux (name of my NTFS partition in windows that i wanna access) as NTFS system is currently in use, try to safely remove the drive (as in ext hdd or pendrive) & then retry.

but i really appreciate ur support all the way through.

It not a problem.
But I noticed your trying to mount it instead of access it via network folders.

ya...since the drive is not listed under network folders though i have shared the folder.

problem solved...u need to have vmware tools properly installed in your linux guest to use shared folders...in vmware settings there is a provision to add a folder as shared thru a wizard, pretty easy..once u r done with these...the shared folder will show up under /mnt/hgfs
