Undo changes on your computer

In searching I found Microsoft SteadyState and it is discontinued program for Windows XP.
It is like a virtual environment where you can use your computer but after a reboot all changes are undone, deleted files are restored, in essence your computer is restored back to the previous state(before the virtual environment).

Does anyone know of any free similar program?
I would like it to replace the need to re-image every time I want to try something that could risk my computer.

Thanks!

I also have been searching for an app like you are describing with no luck. The only thing I have found is with Acronis Home Backup there is a feature called "Try and Decide" which works great. It is a paid app. I can't reccomend the backup because it was full of bugs for me. They have a thirty day demo.

Okay it is good to know that I am not the only one that has been searching for an app like this.

But I have also tried the "Try and Decide" of Acronis by downloading a trial - I could not understand what it was doing, many files were created on my dekstop maybe buffer, so eventually I decided to just stop it and have not tried it again since.
But even if it does work, it is paid and I am looking for a free solution.

However, if you do understand how "Try and Decide" works I will be happy if you can explain it in a nutshell.

How does it work?

You know I used it and never had a problem, not one. So I don't know what kind of problems it might present. I never had any traces of file before or after use.

The concept is it runs in memory and does not change your OS until you are through testing and commit to a save, in which case it writes the changes to your OS. If you choose discard it closes down and no changes are made. Worked slick for me.

It's just that I can't spend money on a computer program now.

for the time being, a free solution is to be used.
