Unexplained change in file permissions

Hi I wonder if anyone has come across this problem and can offer any suggestions. I keep copies of much of my music collection on an external HD and until a week ago everything was working fine. Last week when I booted up my machine and went to play some music I discovered that somehow the permissions had been changed on most of my music and I was locked out of both folders and individual mp3 files. I can change the permissions back but it won't let me do it globally, I have to first unlock the folders and then labouriously change the permissions on each file.

Has anybody encountered this problem? does anybody know what could have caused it and is there any way to globally reset the permissions. It didn't effect all the folders but most of them. I have no idea why. I have good anti-virus protection and firewall. I regularly run anti-virus and spyware scans. Is this a virus or is it some obscure Windows issue. I'd appreciate any advice because it is a real pain to have to individually reset permissions on thousands of audio files. Thanks

Random changes in File Permissions

It may now be too late to join and comment upon this "thread" BUT The answer to your question "Has anybody encountered this problem?" is YES ~ I have.

I have tried the "take ownership" route and that to an extent seemed to solve the issue . . . . . . but then it happens again quite randomly.

Perhaps this should be on a more general "file permissions" Thread
