Unidentified Network No Internet Access

Hey,

I just registered today to post about my issue. I have been reading thread after thread about this issue, where my internet drops every 5-20minutes give or take and it makes for a long read in posts 53 pages or so long. After 4 days of reading/internet dropping nonstop I figure making a post I can check for an answer, instead of sifting through all the other threads would be faster.. and perhaps allow me to avoid another dropped connection - Internet dropped -

Out of the 90or so pages I have read (I see Users Digger and Sexytools making many posts ... if you could help it would be greatly appreciated)
It seem that this post: http://www.sevenforums.com/network-...no-network-access-unidentified-network-4.html is the most like mine, with pics and all. Robert Cartman's post is nearly identical to my current issue (only differance is my troubleshooting always fixes the issue)

Now for some computer specs/background: (forgive me I am not too computer savy if you need more info just let me know what&where to find)

I just bought an HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC (its maybe 3 months old)

I do 0 downloading on the laptop save Windows updates & Windows Microsoft Security Essentials updates. I have 1 game installed on the PC and tend to play it online from time to time. Most of my time on the net involves research (so I know it it can't be torrents/heavy traffic based)

Windows 7 Home Premium (64 Bit OS)
Intel(R)Core(TM)i5CPU 430M @2.27GHz 2.27
4GB Ram

Network Adapter: Broadcom 43225 802.11b/g/n

Last night after trying all sorts of suggestions in the other posts (1 at a time and once finding it didn't work I simply undid the changes made) so I am literaly back to square 1 everytime I try a new method of "fixing" the issue.

Here is what I have tried so far:

  • Power cycle router (other netbook and laptop still work fine)
  • Disable IPv6
  • Adjust the power saver options (couldn't find any for the network adapter)
  • Checked current driver (is up to date and was installed the day I bought the laptop 22/3/2010)
  • Disable/enable wireless network connection (works for 5-20min... same as allowing windows to self troubleshoot the issue via right clicking)
  • Live Mail (Have never set it up)
  • Bonjour (Was never installed on my PC so it is not the issue either)
I left my laptop on last night to see if it would disconnect. When I got home from church the network said it had been connected for 12hours and 7minutes. I then figured HEY IT MUST BE FIXED I was wrong lol. Shortly after I started reading a few more pages on this site I lost my connection again. I find it drops faster when I play my game online (drops withing 10minutes every time) but either way it drops after simple surfing.

This has been going on for about 4-5days and to top it all off my Wife's BRAND NEW Netbook (3weeks old) has started doing the same thing today (she uses her laptop for thesis research/email/facebook/youtube) Nothing has been installed on her Netbook and the only downloads, save youtube vids in the temp int dir, are windows updates. Hers drops maybe 3 times a day, so not nearly as drastic but still annoying lol. The laptop upstairs still works fine and another power cycle resorted in no change at all.

Is your router secured, ie: are you using WPA2/AES as your encryption method? Have you tried changing channels on the router?

Yes it is secured. I'm using WPA2 encryption. I have no idea how to change channels.. could you explain?

also the people that own the house are away till tuesday so after doing the power cycles the other day and seeing no change in the laptop or the other PCs(that still work fine) I ruled out the router.

I am noticing a lot of posts that say the 64Bit OS is causing a lot more problems (which is why I think my laptop is the only one reseting so often) my wifes is os 32 and resets from time to time but the other is XP and has never reset, other then during the power cycles of course.

- internet drop again - posting so people can see the consistancy

EDIT:

Just tried to play my game online (after a record breaking 34min connection) and the connection dropped maybe 5 minutes in.

I rebooted the PC and tried from scratch with the game again (disconnected again within 5min)

So it seems as long as I am only surfing the web I can stay on 20+min
and in game for 5min ish

not sure if that helps anyone figure out the problem =/

Besides the fix in the link below you will most likely need to update the firmware on your router. This is not a 64 bit problem. Don't disable IPv6, I have never seen that solve a single problem. :)

You can also change the channels in your router by going to the advanced settings in the routers control panel. Every routers control panel is different so it's hard to give you exact directions on this, you just need to look around. To access the control panel for a D-link router type 192.168.0.1 into your browser.

The channel problem is a big one with Windows 7. Use anything but channel 6 because that is the default channel for most routers. Other than that firmware updates will usually fix other types of network crashing or disconnection problems.

Ok everything is swtup as per instructions, I selected channel 1 as I was told 1 6 and 11 are usually used and 6 is no good on win 7.

The people upstairs didn't come home yet so I logged into thier router as admin. I hope this works I will update in 1 week with progress report... and thank you again for the info Chev65

I spoke too soon -.-

as of yesterday everytime I start an online game I lose internet connection within the first 5 minutes.

When I trouble shoot the issue it says could not fix

When I disconnect and reconnect it works again just fine... untill I try an online game again.

There is a very recent firmware update 2/18/10 for your DIR-601 that might help with this problem. Just click on where it says support resources "upper right", then click on firmware then you will see the download link.
You will need to access the routers set up page from a wired connection in order to install the firmware update.

This list of Windows 7 drivers may work better for your HP dv6 laptop.
