Can someone advise me please how to unlock the icons in a folder so they can be moved around instead of being locked to a grid all the time? This was the default option in XP but I can't find out how to do it in Win 7.

Kind Regards

Chris

This can only be done on the Desktop. Right click -> View -> uncheck "align icons to grid"
I do not know if this also works for files inside folders, though.

You say " in a folder" so im wondering if you mean disable auto arrange so you can move images and files etc in any order you wish, if so here is a tutorial how to do just that!

Thank you Richard and Boohbah for your replies. Yes it was within folders I wished to disable auto arrange rather than the desktop. I went to the link and followed the instructions and now the folders are as I want them. Within the folders there is now a right click option to uncheck auto arrange. I can't think why this option was not made default in Windows 7 from the beginning.

Kind Regards

Chris

Align Icons to grid

If I uncheck align icons to grid and arrange my icons, when I reboot the system the align icons to grid is checked again and all my arrangement gone back to the left of the desktop.

Any suggestion to fix this?

Thank you
