Unreliable Sound/Often No Sound

Hello Folks,

I guess I've been dealing with this problem for a while but now I'm frustrated enough to reach out.

Early after I put my machine together, I would often start or restart my Windows 7 and the sound would be completely off. I went into my device manager and disabled all FIVE of the "High Definition Audio Device" and left enabled my "VIA High Definition Audio. I disabled the "HD Audio Device" after reading about this in the internet and I can't have sound with any of them re-enabled. Now, about every other time, the system boots without any sound, I will open the device manager, disable the VIA HDA, re-enable it then I can hear an audible "click" in my speakers or headphone (All sound is off when this happens) but still no sound, then am forced to restart my machine and now there's sound. Does anybody find this to be a familiar issue and anybody have solutions?

I think it's the issue with my video card, rather than my sound card, and I really hate my video card (ASUS version of NVIDIA GeForce GT430 - hateful card), but loathe changing it until I build a lower powered machine. My specs are all filled in my sevenforums account.

Thanks everybody.

Could it be your Video card's HDMI is being set as default sound playback device. The next time it happens instead of doing what you have been doing, go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the sound. In the Playback section see which device is set as the default playback device. If it's the HDMI, change it to your "Speakers" (actually your Via audio) and you should get the sound back.

If you have an HDMI cable connected to the Video card, many will automatically set themselves up as the default audio playback device.
