Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

NETSH WINSOCK /RESET

reboot on request and see if that helps.

If not, check Device Manager, and see if there are any errors showing there - make sure that you enable the 'Show Hidden devices' option in the View menu bar option.

Someone will post back to this thread - soon, hopefully! - who has as much knowledge as you'd get from posting there. ;)
Hang tight!

I had the exact same problem as this with my computer. After trying everything I eventually found that after installing KB2961072 the afd.sys file was showing as not digitally signed. (After running sigverif.exe at an elevated command prompt). Note: sfc /scannow showed no errors

Also in device manager (after showing hidden devices is selected) in Non-Plug and play drivers, the "Ancillary Function Driver for Winsock" was showing as this driver is not digitally signed and cannot be started.

The digital signatures stored in the catalogue files for afd.sys were obviously corrupted. I deleted the existing versions of the following files in the directory shown and then re-run the standalone installer for KB2961072 (Windows6.1-KB2961072-x64.msu) and the update installed and the internet worked again.

C:\Windows\System32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\Package_2_for_KB2961072~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.1.cat

Thanks for that - Did you run CheckSUR at all? It should have picked up the CAT file corruption and pointed it out.

Yes I forgot to mention that. CheckSUR found no problems, so I don't know what happened there.

Did you actually look at the log file it produced? It doesn't tell you anything about what it found unless you do (bad design, to my mind!)

Thanks for the input raptor.

The only issue in my device manager is that NVIDIA High Definition Audio is disabled. I had a look at the hidden devices, can't see any new issues. I can seee Ancillary Function Driver for Winsock.

Running sigverif.exe it looks as if its signed.

afd.sys 28/09/2013 2:5.1,2:5.2,2:6.0,2:Signed Package_2_for_KB2875Microsoft Windows

Many thanks tho

OK no luck unfortunately.

After the netless update Ancillary Function Driver for Winsock was flagged. Also in device manager HTTP was flagged.

sigverif confirmed afd.sys was not signed.

I was not sure when to delete those files, after the internetless update or before. I did both. Before: same problem. After: installer encountered an error: 0x80080005 server execution failed.

Cheers

PS. those files are gone from my system now I hope they werent critical :p

Did you run the standalone installer for KB2961072 (after downloading it)? I couldn't ever get the automatic windows update to install KB2961072 without an error but the standalone one worked.

Also noel the checksur was clear before KB2961072 was installed but I never did check it after it was installed and I had lost the internet.

Edit... I also had the http error flagged in device manager as you mentioned. (And like you using system restore to go back and forth to before the upgrade to get my internet back again until I found a solution.)

SFC shows as being clear - so it looks like system protection worked here ;)

I have to admit to being a little confused (not to mention 'under the influence') now.

I'll see what I can do with a clear head tomorrow.

I suggest use system restore to get internet working again. (hopefully). I have uploaded the new signed files to my dropbox account. Download these to your computer. Re install kb2961072 and then overwrite (copy) the catalogue files. This should work I reckon.
