Solved Updated IE 10 to IE 11 Now IE 11 freezes frequently

I just updated my Win 7 Pro from IE 10 to IE 11. Now I have frequent problems every browsing session where the IE 11 browser freezes up after I have opened and closed tabs a few times. It just stops responding, and sometimes if I wait a few minutes it will suddenly unfreeze but then freeze again after a minute or two of browsing using tabs.

When it locks up, I cannot even close it except with Task Manager, and sometimes that even stops working (CtlAltDel does nothing) and I have to use the Start menu to Resart the PC. I never had these problems with IE 10.

I recall installing IE 11 a long while back when IE 11 was first released, had the same problem, and uninstalled it via a sys restore and reverted to IE 10, ran fine. Am I going to have to do this again? Help, please...

Hi,
Try In-Private browsing to test and or No add-ons mode,
Stopped working is common for either a bad add-on or a security suite that is blocking if you use it's toolbar or password saving features/ lastpass....

Thanks for the reply. I browsed some of the other threads on this topic, saw your suggestion to somebody else about setting the advanced option to use software rendering, set that option ON, now seems to be working better. I will try it some more for awhile, and if it is fixed I will close this thread as resolved. So thanks for the tip.

Okay yep good searching
If it happens again go to Manage add-ons Show all add-ons/ Toolbars and extensions and take some screen shots
Uninstall Flash if you have it installed,

It still happens occasionally, but I can live with it. Seems to be related to opening/closing tabs too much. I couid do as you suggest and look at addinsa and flash, but that is not a solution, since I would not have to do that if I reverted to IE 10 where everything worked fine, and I do not want to close any of my addins or flash.

So I will not mark it resolved, and weill wait and hope somebody has some more info or fixes.

There's been several updates for IE11. You might try a "Check for Updates" and see if any show up. Many times, the download versions lag way behind the updates.

I just had 3 updates to IE 11 installed on Sun nite autoupdate.

My graphics driver is up to date per Windows, no better driver available. (Again, if that was the problem, it would be an IE 11 problem that needs fixing, not a driver problem because it worked fine with IE 10).

I can upload or post a Belarc report on my whole system if that would help, but it would be rather lengthy as a post, I don't know if file uploads to ther forum are OK here even though the forum seems to indicate so.

Anyway, it seems to be working good enough I can live with it.

No, I had nopt seen that one, pretty cool. I downloaded it, works great. Let me read up on how to use it, I will then use it to upload my PC info. Thanks for the heads-up. I have lots of the Win7 tools like that, but I have not looked in awhile for new ones, will check them out later.

OK I updated my sys specs, but the new specs still show I am using IE 10, why is that? Everything else looks correct. Can you see the new info?

You can see if the Intel site has a different/ more recent onboard graphic's driver available I'm sure it might be better than windows update one.
Which you can get from Intel or the computer manufactures website either one but Intel's might be a bit more recent

OK. Intel has a neat utility that I downloaded to check and update drivers, it did update my graphics driver. I will see if that helps with this problem, if it does, I will mark the problem resolved, else I will post further info. Thanks for your help.

Sad to say, the news is not good, but AFAICT it is also not caused by what we have been investigating here. Let me explain:

I continued to get freexe problems on web pages but it may be the website (Amazon). What happens is, if I open, in another tab, certain pages by selecting a link on a working page, like say a link to a book, the page opens in that separate tab but is totally unresponxive, and IE usuallu opens a notification bar at the bottom that states that the website is not respomnding and asks if I want to restart the page; doing so simply refreshes the page but it is still frozen. Most of the time I can just close the tab and revert to the web page that provided the link, but sometimes the whole IE freezes up and can only be closed by selecting close window in the command bar.

So I tried this same thjing in Firefox: opened Amazon, browsed for the book, then tried to open that link in another tab just like in IE. FF opened the tab and also had a page freeze BUT the FF browser after a few seconds displayed the following message:

" A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, open the script in the debugger, or let the script continue.
Script: <limk> "

Here is the link to the page where this happened, but it happens on most other books too:

Fortunately the FF error message gave me options to continue, debug, or stop the script. Stopping the script unfroze the page and let me continue. IE 11 does not provide me any indicaztion of what the problem is, it just displays the status notification bar at the bottom of the page like I described above that asks if I want to retry the page.

So... I went to IE 11 and opened the IE Internet Options dialog, selected the Security tab, it is set to Internet zone, I then chose the custom level option in the dialog and used the list of settings to disable scripts. This worked, I could now open that web page and it would be active, but of course it prevented any scripts anywhere else from running.

So now I reset that security back to what it was, the problem returned, but it is only (apparently) on the Amazon website that thius happens, I can do this browsing on another website like B&N and all is normal.

So... here is my question: how can I set IE 11 so it displays such an error message, and set it such that, just like FF, it allows me to simply stop the script from running? I tried messing with ther Advanced settings for IE 11 on enabling error messages and debugging, but it did not allow me to stop the script, so I reverted to what it was. I am now wondering if this is some kind of compatibility issue?

I will take the problem to Amazon after I get this resolved for IE 11, you can be assured. But I know (hope) I will get this fixed with help here long before they do anything.

So again, thanks for your help and please continue to help on this. I vivt Amazon's website probably more than any other single website, so it is really a problem for me.

I'd just roll back to ie10 I had no issue navigating Amazon now or in the past which I've been there often
ie11 bites 10 rules it's the only stable version,

Aargh, I was afraid you'ld say that :=).

I love IE 10 too, and I also have not seen anything in IE 11 to make it worth all this!! Really, the only reason I upgraded to IE 11 was because of the announcement from Microsoft that in a short while it will no longer support IE 10 with patches or anything else, so it will basically be unprotected browsing.

Do you know if there is any way to get IE 11 to allow me to stop a script from running when it has errors? If not, I guess I will have to do what you suggest, and then go to Firefox after IE 10 dies.... because God knows how bad their **new** non-IE browser will be...

Ie11 could be feeding off a bad cache or a bad compatibility view list item ?
If you want to try a few more things first get rid of comp view lists from Microsoft,
Open ie11 and use Alt+TB or gear symbol and Compatibility view settings,
Uncheck all items and close the little window.

Now Use Ctrl+Shift+Delete or Gear symbol/ Safety and Delete browser history,
Check all boxes except for the very top box Uncheck it,
If you use Form fills you can uncheck that item
Then click on Delete.
Save and close ie after and re-open and test.

Hmmm... maybe, but let me think about it.

I will probably just revert to IE 10 while I still have the restore point for it. I would not want to lose all my IE historical data, esp. the cookies. Besides, no guarantee that would help anyway. And I al;ways have Firefox for the future.

Thanks for your help on this. I will still get the new graphics driver back in after the restore, that is a big plus by itself. (I just pray that Amazon goes back to normal if I do go back to IE 10 :=) ).
