Updates Failed to install - Error Code 80071A91

I have been unable to install Windows updates since mid-December, and now have some 11 outstanding.

My machine is a 5 year old Acer Aspire M3910 64 bit Intel Core i3 CPU 540 @3.07GHz with 8GB RAM running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1.

I have downloaded and installed the System Update Readiness Tool from the Microsoft site. However the CBS.zip file generated from the CBS file produced by running this tool is some 12 MB in size and falls foul of the 8MB limit imposed by the forum, and I cannot attach it. How do I get over this?

I have also run SFC /SCANNOW, but it identified no issues.

Help to resolve this updating error would be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Hi Roy

Thank you for your response. I have run chkdsk and tried updating again. The updates failed again, and I do not think chkdsk threw up any issues. I attach the chkdsk log.

I am conscious that I have not been able to submit the CBS.zip file because it exceeded the size limitation spacifed by the forum, but I am not sure as to the best way to proceed with getting this posted. Can anyone help?

Hi Drainbolt,

Can you just copy and compress(zip) the last 2 days entries.

Your error code is a bit of a strange one, never mind we'll press on regardless.

Can you also run the MXdiag tool anr post those results as well, from the link below

Hi Roy,

I have been having trouble breaking my CBS file into bite-sized pieces - it's 197MB in size, hence the delay. Because of the size I have copied portions only. These portions miss out a lot but I hope they are nevertheless of some use. The 4 zips are attached. I will write again on your other suggestions shortly. Thanks for your time.

Hi again Roy,

The link you posted - Windows Genuine and Activation Issue Posting Instructions - led me to the MGADiag tool, not the Mxdiag tool you referred to, so I ran that. Its report is posted below.

Perhaps you can clarify what is an Mxdiag tool?

Also, I would feel happier about running the DOS commands you ask me to execute if you could let me know what their purpose is. Would you mind telling me what they are to do, please?

Hi Drainbolt,

Those commands reset the the update store.

However
Now that i've looked at your logs,
The problem may relate to in iffy MS update, there were lots of people having probs with it on its release.

Before you try the command mode changes,
can you confirm if you have KB2984972 Installed, if you do please remove it via
control panel >> programs/features >> installed updates.

Then try updating a gain.

Roy

Hi Torchwood,

I do have KB2984972 installed. It was installed on 6 Dec 2015 along with a whole lot more - I did a repair install shortly before that (system restore would not work) and was in the process of getting the machine up-to-date with Windows updates. I have tried several times to uninstall that update but each time I am told that it could not be uninstalled. "An erreor has occurred. Not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled." Updates were however installing OK on 7 and 9 Dec in bulk, and one or two have come through after that, but I have had this rump of 11 updates that will not install for several weeks now.

For what its worth I tried to install the outstanding updates again after trying to uninstall KB 2984972, but again they failed.

I will try the command mode changes once you confirm I now should.

Hi Torchwood
I have tried Method 1 from the tutorial you referred to, but without success. The standalone installer came up with the following message: "Transaction support within the specified resource manager is not started or was shut down due to an error."

Shall I now try to reset the update store in line with the method given in your post #4? By the way, can you point me to the tutorial from which those steps are copied, please?

Error 80071A91

Hi Roy,

I am afraid that I could not find the instructions pasted into your post#4 in the link you gave me.

However, I tried to carry out those instructions - unsuccessfully.

The attrib -r-s-h* command attracted the rejoinder "Invalid switch - -r-s-h*" , and then when I tried the second part, the attrib -a-h-s*.TM* command resulted in the corresponding error response.

Any other suggestions?

Hi Roy

Thank you for coming back so soon. I tried the set of commands again in the light of your query. I must have got the spacings wrong in the fiirst set of commands in some respect because this time I was able to get to the end of that set OK (I think). (On completing attrib -r -s -h * it came up with "Are you sure? (Y/N)" and I entered Y. I hope this was right.)

On the second set of commands, after entering
attrib -a -h -s *.TM*
it returned "File not found - *.TM*".

I tried several different permutations of . TM * with and without gaps between the various characters but that response is the best I got.

I am at a loss now as to how to proceed.

Not Good

Hi Drainbolt,
Windows Update giving error code 80071A91 - Windows 7 Help Forums .

Have a read of the above thread, Those Guys are far more competant than me.

There is a slight change to 1 of the posts i suggested, from Troy.

As you go thru it, they seem to think this is one of the more UNsolveable errors.

You could try or go for the Repair.

Roy

Not good it looks like

Hi Torchwood

It certainly is looking like an unsolveable error, but thank you for your time and help, even if this time we have not been successful!

For the record, I have tried some of the routines suggested in the other thread you linked me to. I first tried what Troy6 suggested in his post #23 on the thread (which in turn referred to an MS article). That got me nowhere. Specifically, it could not find any *blf files on my machine, not any *regtrans-ms files.

That perhaps is not surprising since the MS article relates to the Windows Vista OS, whereas mine is Win7, as is the machine of the original poster on that thread. So that was no good.

I then went on to the routine in Troy6's further post #26. This again got me nowhere, because it could not locate c:\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxfLog\*, nor C:\Windows\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.blf, nor C:\Windows\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.regtrans-ms, as the attached output from the cmd prompt given below shows:

So, I am not sure what to try now. I am loathe to do another reinstall, having done one only a couple of months ago. But anyhow, thank you again for your time and assistance.
