Solved updates in italics?

Yup, whenever I do a reinstall and then update, I have to hide all those language packs. Just have to suck it up and right click each one and hide it.

A quicker way is select the first one, press the Shift key and select the last one then right-click the whole highlighted bunch, and then choose Hide - job done.

sorry to resurrect an old post, but i didn't see this being discussed anywhere else on the internet.

so if the italics are just for Ultimate version updates only, then that means that the Windows Updater is not smart enough to figure out what version of Windows you are running, even though it is a system service (multiple actually), and it is easy for even me to find the version from a command line command. so then what does it scan the computer for to tell me there are updates, if not what version of Windows i am running???

just curious if anyone knows.

The Language Pack updates are ONLY visible on Ultimate and Enterprise machines.

I don't believe that the italics relate to the Windows edition at all - but offhand, I can't say what they do refer to.

the ones i refer to are not Language Updates but ones for Win7 Pro. there are over 30 of them, and more than half are italic.

what's more, i've looked up the KB updates, and none of them say anything about being specific to Windows 7 Ultimate. is there a MS document on this?

Edit: just found this on a Microsoft Answers page:
Optional yet recommended updates are displayed in italics.
The "Windows Update->Optional" category of updates contain both fully optional ones (e.g. updated help files, more recent drivers) and others that are optional in the sense that they don't fix a security threat or widespread stability problems, but are however recommended because they can solve actual issues people are facing (e.g. KB2522422: Cannot print from Internet Explorer 9 using some Canon printers).

Windows 7 Updates: Optional updates are displayed in Italics - Microsoft Community

it's not an official MicroSoft answer, but another layer to the puzzle...
