Upgrade Discs - Does prev version have to be activated

Hi all

PLEASE to anybody who has an UPGRADE version of W7 (NOT THE FULL RETAIL DISK).
Can they please answer the question

Does it check to see if the previous version of Windows is actually ACTIVATED before it does its install stuff.

(I don't care what it *might* say or not say on the MS site. I'm curious to see if you really do have to have an activated version of Windows to use the upgrade disk).

Note I'm not asking if you can do a CLEAN install as you WILL be able to -- for example you have to run the install file from Windows XP initially and then at boot time it will give you the CUSTOM install (Clean) and disable the upgrade on the menu.

Hello everyone,

Just to let you all know that I have confirmed that you can do either a clean install, custom install, or upgrade install with a retail Upgrade version of Windows 7 and activate it on a clean unallocated (blank) drive or partition without any other OS installed or with one installed. It does not matter.

Good news Jimbo,

Most are saying the Upgrade version will install on a new clean HD, with no previous OS installed. Same as a Full version.

A few people are saying it didn't work for them, after the first custom install it won't activate. They just ran a upgrade install over the new Custom install and it will then activate. Just like the old vista way.

Your mileage may vary...

(makes it a moot point then why they are selling a Full or an Upgrade version - seems marketing has lost its marbles here -- still what do I know abour MS's finances .

oh well, i bought the full version of home premium on pre-order, thinking i was getting a bargain.

and now they're selling the as-good-as upgrade version for the same price...
