Upgrade from Vista SP2 not working

I've tried upgrading my Vista PC twice. The installation looks like it's going along fine and after about an hour it seems like it finishes the "installing devices" part and when it restarts and comes back up it says that the installation failed and the previous OS will be restored. Anybody else having this problem?

AMD Phenom 8650
4GBs GSkill PC 8500 RAM
ASUS M3N78 Pro MB
XFX 8800GT video card
Vista Business with SP2 build 6002

I even disconnected the printer because it said the drivers wouldn't work.

Welcome to the forums. I believe the general feeling is that you should do a clean install, although there have been a couple successful upgrades. May be cause your trying to upgrade business to ultimate. Just a guess on my part.

Personally I would do a clean install to another partition and have a dual boot rather than upgrade. While the Seven beta seems very stable, it is *beta* software and there is still no telling what kind of problems will arise. With a dual boot, you still have Vista to fall back on if the Seven install becomes nonfunctional for some reason.

I would say that is probably the case. Try upgrading to 7 Business instead of Ultimate. There is information on the forum here:http://www.sevenforums.com/general-...l-versions-your-windows-7-build-7000-iso.html on how to unlock the other versions.

I have to agree with Gary. A clean install would be your best choice. Many people have large external USB drives, I would backup all important data, boot from the Windows 7 7000 disk, and use the advanced options to format the destination drive. If your printer drivers worked ok with Vista, they should work ok with Windows 7. (should) I've only found 1 in 20 programs that didn't run in Windows 7.

I will probably just try a clean install but to answer your question Bare Foot Kid, I am using Vista 32bit and I didn't try to pick a specific version to upgrade to, should I, would it make a difference? Also I forgot to mention that I have a dual monitor setup using multimon.

Hello again.

Just remember that some of the Windows 7 builds are 64-bit and there is no 32-bit to 64-bit upgrade path. A clean install would be best; just be sure to backup anything you would not want to lose.

I'm not sure of the results people are having with Windows 7 and MultiMon as I haven't used it with 7.

The dual monitor setup is not going to make much of a difference - but the upgrade will, as your Vista is going to be heavily customized from a default Vanilla installation.

However, another poster has mentioned that there is a possible solution offered at another site that has to do with removing some very particular registry entries in order to make the upgrade work just fine.

I got it installed by doing "custom install". Thanks for the advice. Now I'm slogging through the problems and reinstalls.
