I hope this is the correct sub-forum.

I have a family member with an issue that I cannot solve my googling the problem.

The family member tried to upgrade their windows 7 to windows 10. Something went wrong (apparently - I was not there) and it restored to Windows 7. Now one of their other hard drives appears to be completely empty (931gb of 931gb free) and it was renamed to "system reserved". The drive letters has been switched with the dvd-drive.

Is there any way to move the system reserved part to the c:\ drive where it belongs and save the data?

All you have to do is set the C partition Active and run startup repair until windows boots again.

There is no moving of the system reserved partition, you are simply writing the system files to the C partition so windows will boot again, but as I have said, the C partition HAS to be marked Active in order to do that. It can easily be done with a partition Wizard Boot CD and a System Repair Disc, also known a Startup repair disc, made on any Windows 7 machine of the same bit version, 32 or 64 bit and of the same Service Pack version, hopefully your Windows version was Service Pack 1.

It can also be marked Active using Diskpart with your install DVD or aforementioned System repair disc.

Thanks a lot for your thorough reply. I will arrive at my parents house later today and then I will be able to actually take a look.

Would the situation change if the PC were to be found running Windows 7 64 bit @ SP 2?

I performed the actions mentioned in the other thread you linked.

Weirdly under "my computer" the drive is still showing 931 of 931 gb being empty.

Would it make any sense to run a data-retrieval program?

Did you actually open the drive to check what is in there.

We did indeed check the contents of the drive. There is one folder with the following contents:

After rebooting the PC and installing windows updates it seems the system recovery partition has returned. This time instead of sitting in the d:\ drive it created a new drive letter: g:\
