Upgrade help for old PC

Thinking of upgrading the old windows pc with ram and gpu for internet purpose...,will increasing the ram help in performance and is the gpu for this still available?? ...

heres the current specs :

Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.26GHz
RAM
1.00GB DDR
Motherboard
Intel D845GVSR
Graphics
SyncMaster (1152x864@60Hz)
Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller (Intel)

Just want to improve it,plz do not suggest buying new pc becoz i do have it !!!!!:info:

Just quickly looking up the version of your "Intel D845GVSR" motherboard, you can upgrade to a maximum total of 2 GB DDR. DDR is a slow ram which most most machines today use either DDR2 or if it's only 2 years old, DDR3.
I don't mean to be insensitive, but it's not worth the effort of upgrading this machine. Even after you were to upgrade everything to what it can maximum support, you'd still be 3 years behind every other machine on the market at minimum...
All honesty, my recomendation is to buy a new machine.

Ram won't hurt
An ssd will do more but yes 1gb is hardly enough to get to a bare minimum for any win-7 version 32 or 64 bit

I believe the cpu is okay not sure about the Pentium but at least it's above 2.0

What brand computer is this exactly and model and have you asked them for upgrade options ?

Heck I've upgraded a lot of stuff on a 6-7 year old Acer so anything is possible but it sounds like this was a x-per :/

Did some more research on this Mother Board. Looks like it only supports IDE cabling so SSD won't be an option to upgrade. Also this board only has 3 PCI slots. So you're looking at a very old Video Card if you want to upgrade the GPU. As for the CPU, that may be usable since it's at least a 4. Though it's gonna be strained to run anything post Vista.

If this machine is running something pre Win7, i'd move it over to a Linux distro like Ubuntu & Xubuntu. They are nice OSs that don't use too much resources. I've got a test PC which runs Ubuntu 9 x32. Similar hardware, but with about 3 GB of RAM.

Based on your last edit, if you've already obtained a new PC & just need a use for this older one, if you can find some good NIC cards, you could turn this machine into a Router/Firewall with the Untangle software. I have a small mini ATX with 2 GIG etherent ports. I use it for a Firewall. The Linksys router I have doesn't support web filter tools, so I use that to manage my home network. You'll defenetly want to add that extra stick of RAM before you consider that.

Believe it or not but they actually make IDE based SSDs. I don't have any experience with them so can't comment on how well they work. Computers & Tablets, All Laptop Accessories, Internal SSDs, PATA, ide ssd - Newegg.com

I wouldn't recommend one for the OP's machine, though, I'm in the camp that thinks the machine simply isn't worth spending money on to upgrade. At most, I would bump up the RAM but DDR ram is pretty expensive compared to DDR2.

I do have some experience with those IDE SSD drives. To be honest, they are better than a standard IDE HDD, but with the slow throughput speeds on those outdated cabling, you don't get the full advantage of SSD's with the Sata cable standard. I believe the biggest size for those IDE ones is 128 GB. I think the one I had was about 16 GB. Used it for OS & Outlook. Had a larger drive for static storage & programs.

Looked up some pricing & you can get some resonablly priced IDE SSD drives for under $50, but they're gonna be small. If this is something you want to consider, I'd run a small SSD for your high usage items, (Might want to calculate what programs you use most & what puts the most hurt on your disk I/O). Then run static files to a secondary IDE drive with more space. Try to get your folders like Desktop to redirect their storage to the secondary drive.
