You should have SP-1. The easy way to tell is hit the Windows key and the Pause key and you will see this. It states in the picture Service pack 1.

You should find you Product Key on the Microsoft Sticker located on your computer. If it's a laptop it might be in the battery compartment.

Should I proceed? I'm thinking I do have something seriously wrong, because I can't even uninstall some programs now (such as Adobe Acrobat) and other programs have become "stuck" in my program list, and I can't get rid of them. Icons are disappearing from known file types, and I can't restore them, etc.

I'm concerned about NOT having "Service Pack 1" appear with my version of Windows in the screenshot above.

HELP! Anybody?

Hi Tomkat,
The link i sent you included SP1,
By the sounds of it you have other problems that have NOT let you upgrade to SP1, and are more than likely the cause of your other programs failing, they probably needed later versions of Netframework BUT these need SP1.

Please download Belarc, password/product code licence finder.

It will find ALL of your required licences, print it out.

Why your system has not upgraded, i cannot tell there's nothing wrong on the MS side, according to the tool,
I suspect either faulty previous install media or Malware.

It might be easier/quicker to perform a clean install using the ISO you've just made, it will take you straight to SP1.

Windows Update will not update and I've tried multiple fixes

There will be more updates afterwards tho.

Once there installed set up yours, (hence Belarc)

Just change your boot order in Bios to CD first, insert disc now

REBOOT

Install, follow instructions but SKIP product code it should auto activate.

As the link is for a generic ISO, NO Bloatware, your Dell might require specific drivers, go to the homepage make/model/support/drivers and download the Updater ONLY, it will check your system automatically.

I think I found part of my problem...

My last successful update was in 2012!
I have no idea what caused the failure, or why it happened, but...
I'm downloading and installing updates as I type this - so hopefully they get me to SP1, and I can proceed from there.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I was SUCCESSFUL in getting to SP1, then using the ISO (DVD) to "repair" Windows 7 and... EVERYTHING WORKS! My 3D modeling program no longer crashes! I did get a message about NET framework needing updated, so I believe that was part of the issue. HUGE THANKS to everyone here - I could NOT have done it without your help!

QUESTION: Since Windows 7 is now "end of life," is there ANY reason for me to keep "Auto Updates" enabled?

Reboot a couple more times and then check Windows 7 Updates again.
It might offer some more updates, including Net framework.

The NET framework already updated. (Hence why my 3D modeling programs work) But, when I get home, I will still reboot a few more times then check for more updates as you suggested.

I doubt anyone here using win-7 is on auto updating
I myself go the security only route of which we got a brake February
I'd even wait awhile after they a reported to being released in case they are recalled like this round was

Well... it looks like I got excited prematurely. My 3D modeling program crashed again as soon as I tried to perform any function.
I have 213 "important" updates to install, so I'll try again later.

What Windows 7 did you finally install and was it a Clean Install?
