Upgrade to 7 or Stay with Vista

i'm not sure if this question goes here but here is my question. Since windows 7 is coming out tomorrow, i might pick up a copy of it. I've been thinking if i should upgrade my Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 home premium. Should i do the upgrade?

Also, if i do the upgrade should i do the upgrade option or the custom install option? i do want a clean system but i'm scared that my laptop would be mess up after doing that. What files get kept and/ or deleted when i do the custom install, anything i should watch out for. And what is the upgrade option, does all my files and programs get kept and just replaces the OS?

should you go from vista to win 7 YES. shoud you do the inplace u pgrade, that depends. How much of a PITA are you willing to bear to get the most efficient win 7 setup you can. Upgrade is easier, clean is better.

How much data is on the drive that you cant live without? those are the variables.
I do clean all the time everytime. Your call

OK.
1. No you shouldnt do the upgrade, it sounds good, but all its going to do is bring mayhem further down the track.

2.Custom Install option is a clean install, will format your drive, will leave nothing, if you select the right settings.

3. Upgrade just overwrites your Vista, and leaves all your personal files untouched.

IF you do happen to do a Clean install, don't forget to check if youve got drivers, and to backup your files.

Are you happy with Vista? If you are, it's stable now, so it's not as huge an upgrade as it was. So is it actually worth making the upgrade to you?
If it is, I'd do a clean install. One thing you should definitely do: make a backup of ALL of your drivers before doing the install. I use Driver Magician Lite for this, but I hear Drivermax is very good also. Just Google for them, and you'll find them. Your Vista drivers should work in Win7 without any problems if they're not installed with the OS install.

ok heres my situation. my laptop originally came with XP and i upgraded to vista and now i want to install 7. i have no idea if doing a custom install would keep any of my laptops factory softwares. does it? i dont mind going through a couple more steps to get a better install. right now, i dont really have anything on my laptops hard drive except programs that i dont mind downloading again. other things such as pictures, music, movies, and personal stuff is on an external hard drive. do i need to back up my C: drive? or back up anything?

If its already backed up, go ahead on the install, go Custom install, and format the partition, and let it go.

And no, Clean install wont have your Manufacturer's JUnk Programs on it.

so i dont need to back up the C drive or drivers? i have no extra external hard drive laying around to do this

Well, W7 should have its own drivers for most of your hardware, but if it doesn't, just visit the Manufacturer's website, and download the latest version. If your Personal files are already backed up, You can go ahead, but check the backed up files to make sure it's all there, just so you don't go "OMG! i didn't backup that new file i got" Good Luck!

ok got it thanks for the help. so right now i got the windows 7 professional and i think its the full retail version for $29.99 from microsoft store. since home premium and professional is the same price. i've just downloaded the iso file and need to go grab a DVD to burn the iso file onto it. then i am ready to install 7. hope all goes well.
