Hello Guys :D

First of all, Please move this to right section if this doesn't belongs here ;) Thanks.

I would like to ask about my HP G62-340US with Pre-Installed with Windows 7 Home Premium and
I also have a Windows 7 Professional Legit Key installed on other machine.
Now, my other machine with Win7Pro is, I didn't use it anymore, and formatted the drive few months back.

Is it Okay If I upgrade my HP G62-340US with Win7 Home Premium to Windows 7 PRO using the same key that I used before on my OLD machine that was not available anymore?

any help would be appreciated. thank you.

Hi netbox,

The answer to your question is "it depends" (helpful I know)

Basically, if your old machine came with Windows 7 Professional pre-installed then it is probably an OEM copy. This means that the license is locked to that machine and that machine only and can't be transferred.

However, if it is a retail copy. That is, you went out and bought the disk, and it didn't come pre-installed then it should be fine. Although Windows may ask you to call Microsoft for activation, just so you can tell them that it isn't in use any more. Here's a tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1818-upgrade-install-windows-7-a.html

I'd be inclined to give Windows Anytime Upgrade a try.

Go to Start>All Programs>Windows Anytime Upgrade and choose Enter An Upgrade Key then enter the product key for your Windows Professional disc.

If Win Pro is an OEM version I think you'll be out of luck, but if it is a retail version, the upgrade should work.

Ow Thanks for the replies guys... I really appreciated your help..

by the way, I downloaded the ISO from Microsoft and install, then entered the Windows 7 Professional Key in it , so i think its not OEM :)

But the thing is my Professional key was used before on old machine and activated it.
Is there'll be no problem when I used it in my Windows 7 Home Premium OEM to upgrade to Windows 7 PRO?

Sounds like a retail key to me.

You shouldn't have any problems, the only thing you MAY get (Not ran across this myself so this is purely anecdotal) is Windows may insist that you phone Microsoft to explain that the previously activated machine is no longer in use.

Thanks to all who have helped me. I'll try upgrade my Windows 7 Home Premium to Professional as soon as I have created my recovery disk.

OFF-Topic: my HP comes with recovery manager (restore it to manufacturer setup) so, after I created a backup I will upgrade it. Thanks again guys.
