Solved Upgraded Win 7 Pro 32-Bit to 64-Bit - Now Can't Activate?!

Hi.

Purchased a refurbished Dell 755 DT (64-Bit capable) from Walmart with a genuine MS Windows 7 Pro 32-bit version/key installed. Needed 64-bit as I work with large data sets ... created a bootable USB with Win 7 Pro 64-bit ISO, re-installed, everything works ... but after entering in the (prior 32-bit version) product key I get an error 0x8007232B DNS name does not exist.

It's the same machine, same version of windows (7 Pro) ... just did a custom re-install to 64-bit. So how do I resolve this and re-activate? Should I call Microsoft or the tech support from the Walmart refurbisher?

Never mind! Fixed it!

FIY .. For anyone else with this problem, run command prompt as an administrator and enter command

slmgr -ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

Replace the Xs with the product key to convert the key to MAK ... re-activate and you should be good.

Is there are COA sticker on the machine's case for Windows 7Pro? From what I can see, the machine is likely to have originally shipped without any installed OS.
If that's the case, then it's not eligible under the refurbisher program.

Refurbisher Keys are NEVER MAK keys - they are always OEM_NSLP Keys.

Unless you have a right to use an MAK Key from your employer (or college) - and the machine has an appropriate COA sticker (for Vista Business or Win7 Pro) then the installation is 'problematic' at best.
If you have a COA sticker for Windows 7 on the machine, then unless there are good reasons, it would have been better to use that Key rather than an MAK.
If you don't have a COA sticker, then the install is counterfeit.

It does have what looks like a tamper-proof shiny sticker titled "Windows 7 Prof for Refurb PCs" with another (I guess original) sticker marked out with an X.

So after reintalling the same version but 64-bit, I did use that key ... and then got an activation error ... and I was prompted to a troubleshooting guide which suggested converting to a MAK.

The OS was 'pre-installed' when I got it, had to type in the Key from the refurb sticker and then re-installed the 64-bit version. Hopefully everything stays fine.

How did you get this MAK Key? - they are only sold in bulk, and not valid for resale.

It's likely that your original Key from your refurb sticker was perfectly valid - and simply needed telephone activation.
