USB 3.0 ports on x58-ud5 rev 2 not responding

Hey guys,

Have a really big favor I need to ask. Can someone link me if they had success utilizing the USB 3.0 ports(2 ports) and the steps they took to make them work.

I have an on going battle getting these ports to work at USB 3.0 speeds.

I have tried a multitude of drivers and my Dell u3014 USB 3.0 hub / note 3 phone only are recognized / run at USB 2.0 speeds. When plug USB 3.0 devices into the ports they are recognized but win 7 always comes back with the message to please connect the devices to a faster port. Would really appreciate any help

In this photo see how it shows as a usb 3.0 host controller / root hub. I have connected my note 3 phone but as you can see there is the error this device can perform faster if connect to a super speed USB 3.0 port.
Also you will see that it lists two "Generic USB Hub" this is from the USB 2.0 port of one of the monitors connected. When the monitor is connected to the USB 3 port I t reports as: "Renesas Electronics USB 2.0 Hub" Oddly enough, the Realtek USB 3.0 Card reader cannot be read nor can USB 3.0 from the phone. Something has to be missing and I have tried a slew of drivers already.


This photo shows how the system reports the USB 3.0 hub on the dell monitor as USB 2.0, Oddly enough when I connect it to the USB 2.0 port on the computer the 2 listings that say Renesas Electronics USB 2.0 HUB dissapear and are reported back as:
Realtek Usb 3.0 Card Reader. Now how weird is that?


EDIT: IS it possible that I need to flash the firmware? Right now it is at firmware 3034. If I flash it to an earlier version maybe I will have a better chance of using it?

Edit: The motherboard uses Renesas Electronics uPD720200 Version 3 rom chip. I have tried 2 different firmwares now Version 3.0.2.8 and 3.0.3.4 My devices still only show as a USB 2.0 connections. The dell hub still will not utilize the usb 3.0 hub nor will it show the memory card reader (will only show when plugged into a usb2 slot).

I am thinking that maybe the issue is more driver driven but nothing I can do helps.
-Installed Realtek drivers
-Installed 3 different renesas drivers
- Changed driver manually from Renesas USB 2.0 hub and to Renesas USB 3.0 Hub (dell port)
- What else can I do?

I have the same board but how do you tell if its rev 1 or rev2?

Second, I noticed in bios bootup it gives an IRQ for usb3 but which ports are usb3? If you let me know I can plug in a usb3 device in and report back.

I am using Bios FF3 from Tweaktown its a Gigabyte X58-ud5 rev 2 board. I just spent 7 hrs troubleshooting and am almost ready to give up on this board. Great motherboard but windows 7 just doesnt seem to like USB 3.0.

When you say the IRQ for USb3 are you asking from the bootup screen? My problem is not that nothing will read, but that more that usb3 is never utilized and is still disabled.

Hi I just went through this with a startech usb 3.0 card. Once I installed the VIA_XHCI_Driver_4.50A_AP driver. (not that you need it) I no longer got the it could go faster when connecting usb thumb drives.

Though my Samsung Galaxy S5 did. When you connect the phone to the computer pull down the top of the phone screen to access usb connections. Select the 3.0 USB on the bottom of the list. Then you will have USB 3.0. Note that with 5 minutes of being inactive it will revert back to USB 2.0 speeds. Also on my phone it goes into airplane mode. So no connectivity. Hope this helps.

Dell U3014 monitor NOT compatible with NEC/Renesas USB 3.0 chipset

The USB 3.0 hub inside the U3014 monitor is NOT compatible with NEC/Renesas USB 3.0 controller chipset found in most recent computer's motherboards. With the NEC/Renesas chipset, you might experience within few minutes some randomly disconnecting USB 3.0 drives and SD cards connected to the U3014 monitor.

This is not a problem with Dell U3014 monitor, it is a problem with the NEC/Renesas USB 3.0 chipset known to have some dropout problems.

To solve this problem, you need to add inside the computer a USB 3.0 controller card based on Texas Instruments TUSB7340 chipset.

I installed in my computer the Startech PEXUSB3S4 SuperSpeed USB 3.0 card (built with the Texas Instruments TUSB7340 chipset). I plugged-in the USB 3.0 cable (supplied with the U3014) and my computer is now very stable.

Also, I use the latest drivers available on the Realtek website (for the monitor's SD card reader), and on the Texas Instruments website on the TUSB7340 chipset web page (for the Startech USB 3.0 card).

No more randomly disconnecting problems with USB 3.0 flash drives, external drives or the SD card reader inside the Dell U3014 monitor.

I made some simple speed test copying a 3Gb file on a SanDisk Extreme Pro USB 3.0 flash drive. From my own experience, the Texas Instruments chipset is about 21% - 26% slower than NEC / Renesas chipset.

But for maximum stability, the Texas Instruments chipset is a winner! (and it's still a lot faster than USB 2.0)

NEC / Renesas chipset: 181 Mb/s read speed; 138 Mb/s write speed.
Texas Instruments chipset: 143 Mb/s read speed; 102 Mb/s write speed.
