USB 3.0 vs esata?

Hello, I've been looking around for a new external hdd and I haven't found too much real world reviews on the performance between USB 3.0 drives vs esata drives. Does anybody here know of a site or have any personal experience to give? Which one has better support as far as latest drivers? Any compatibility issues? My specs are in the usual place on this forum. Any insight would be appreciated.

From what I have seen and read, eSATA gives better performance at the present time. eSATA is what I use, but I don't have a USB 3.0 interface to really compare it with.

Thanks for the link. Yeah I was leaning towards esata. I currently have a cheap WD500G usb 2.0 and it's really slow. So I really want to upgrade. I use it for backing up my pc.

Get a dock like the Thermaltake BlacX and just put whatever drive you want into it

$23 after rebate. eSATA when you have it, USB 2.0 when you don't. I own a couple of these and they are great.

Thanks, yeah I was looking at those too. I don't want to wait for shipping though. I'm heading out later today to larger electronics store called Fry's. I might pick one up from them.

usb 3.0 transfer from hhd to external

hey guys i have a question regarding transfer speeds from my internal 120gb ssd to my western digital 3tb external hd. first things first i am running windows 7 64 bit with an i7 processer with usb 3.0 , 8gb Ram on my laptop. going from the external to internal im grabbing speeds of 94MB to about 170MB. however from internal to external its about 28MB to 40MB i wanted to know if this was normal and if there is anyway to make it go faster. it may be the case that u r not connecting on high speed usb port or else the hdd is fragmented. essentially second 1 dsnt looks good reason since there is lot of difference between I/O speeds.

So, can you take a single large file...like an ISO or a zip and time it from Internal to External? So, rather than saying 20-40MB/sec...you can say hey it took 64 seconds to transfer X amount of data, so an average of XX MB/s.

when i am giving the speeds it is for a group of files. say anywhere between 8gb and 25 gb its still the same... i will check the ports and do a disk defrag and let you guys know. thank you

Are we talking MB/sec or Mb/sec. 40 MB/sec is appr. 400Mb/sec, and that would be pretty good. And 170MB/sec is amazing unless that is purely on SSDs.
