I am having problems with a USB 3.0 flash drive which has started causing BSOD when I plug it in to my Win 7 x64 SP1 PC. I have tried two different Windows installs on the same PC with the same result. However both installs are not fully patched after having to restore from a not fully patched drive image. Patches are mainly dotNet 3.5 related plus various security patches for Word(Viewer) and compatibility fixes.

It does not BSOD immediately, it can take around 1 minute but it then BSOD's giving various errors such as

The flash drive has programs and video files on it and I did copy some files to the drive okay. I then plugged it into my media player which I have done many times before without issue. However this time after returning the flash drive back to my PC and plugging it in, my PC now crashes. I would like to recover the files on the drive so would appreciate any advice on the best way of doing that. Fixing the errors on the drive would be helpful but I do not know of any none windows ie boot CD way of doing that. I did notice that my media player did not show all the files on the flash drive when I tried it however this does not necessarily mean a problem is it does seem to have some problems with ntfs drives where it sometimes does not show all the files.

The problems with BSOD began AFTER I removed the flash drive from my media player which is a stand alone none Windows based device.

Suggestions on how to recover the Flash drive files would be appreciated such as programs to try. If I can recover the needed files I can then format the drive.

I have never come across such problems with windows accessing ntfs drives before.

BTW This happens on both USB 3.0 add in card and the native Intel USB 2.0 ports.

Thank you for the prompt for the correct information.

Please note that Win7_#3 is my main windows install that I use but it is not where I have done most of the testing with the flash drive. Win7_#2 is the install which has the most dmp files and most BSOD.

I do still have some problems with USB 3.0 cards and not working with sleep/standby where the devices disappear after resuming standby and I have been unable to use standby without my USB 3.0 card(s) disappearing. This means I have not been using standby which means high power usage for long periods which I am not happy with TBH. I do have an unresolved thread about that. Problems keep stacking up and I am not making much headway on any of the issues because more issues including this latest USB flash problem come along.

Your main system is running a counterfeit activation and I have no doubt your other system is running a counterfeit activation too.

Troubleshooting a counterfeit installation is useless as it is not known what has been modified to your system.
A counterfeit installation contains heavily modified code which causes the system to behave in unexpected ways.
For this reason, analyzing counterfeit systems is unreliable and most analysts won't try it.

I recommend to install a genuine copy of Windows.
If, after you have installed a genuine copy of Windows, you still get BSOD's we'll be happy to assist you.
