USB High-Low sound every few minutes

I keep getting the USB disconnect sound and my mouse will freeze every few minutes. I have tried 1. switching the mouses usb port. 2. reformatting the computer. 3. unplugging the USB hubs from the MOBO. the problem isnt that bad right now and probably happens every 15 minutes now but before i reformatted it was happening every 5 seconds and i couldnt even trouble shoot because it took me 5 minutes to get the mouse cursor across the screen. It might also be worth mentioning that the problem got really bad after installing and playing L4D2.

I am using windows 7 64 bit

Is it a wired mouse?
Do you have the latest drivers? Check on Device manager for any device with a yellow exclamation mark by it

first off thank you for such a quick reply.
It is a wired Logitech mouse. There is nothing on device manager with an exclamation point on it. as for the drivers its a fairly old mouse so im not sure the drivers would still be up. however, i have tried bringing the mouse to a friends house who also runs window 7 64 bit and at least for the 30 minutes i had it plugged in there were no problems

Do you have many USB devices connected at the same time? Maybe it is a power problem. Try disconneting other devices and experimenting with the mouse. What power supply do you have? On a second thought, your i7-860 is only 95W, so it woudl have to be a wimpy power supply to be presenting problems. But it is worth checking

I remembered how to see if it is a power problem. Right click My computer, Device Manager, Universal Serial Bus controller, right click USB root hub, click on Power tab and see how much power every device is using. If it is close to the max, that might be the problem.

Also, can it be the cables in your mouse are damaged? Try the opposite experience, plug another mouse to the same port and see if you have ht esame problem

yeah im gonna see if my buddies new wireless mouse works cause if it does im about due for a mouse upgrade anyways so rather than spend all this time trying to fix it i can just do that as for the power usage it says i need 0mA for the root hubs and i have 500 mA available.

If the mouse is connected and it is showiung 0mA, then uyuo haev a cable problem, it should be drawing some current

ok i found the mouse under generic usb hub its drawing 98 mA i found the drivers for it but they dont have windows 7 drivers for it should i get vista drivers? i know windows seven is on the same architecture as vista.

They usually work. Make sure they are for 64 bits as well.
Indeed, 98mA is not a problem, but what about everything else? Do you have several devices attached?

yeah everything looks to have enough power. i changed the usb slot and its been maybe 45 minutes without a problem ill probably stop trying to fix it for now and not post again until i have tried my buddies wireless mouse. Thanks again for sticking through this with me i have ruled out alot of potential problems because of it.

OK, i figured it out. i did two things simultaniously but i havent had the problem since i did. the first thing is i cleaned out the mouse sensor. Not sure if it helped but what the heck. the second thing which i think actually fixed the problem is this. I went device manager (if you dont know how to get to it you can search for it) then i went to my Universal serial bus controllers. From here right click on the different contorllers and go to properties till you find what hub your mouse is under (mine was under generic usb hub). then go to the far right tab under power management. Under this a box will be checked that sets windows to turn off the mouse to save power. I unchecked this box and since then i have yet to have the problem. Hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing the results. I never thought of that, I woudln't think it would be turning it on and off all the time.
