We all do stupid things... thats life.

I unplugged USB stick '4G imation nano pro' from USB port"1" while the laptop was hibernated, file manager(TC) maybe was still open on the drive, I only inserted stick to copy a file to laptop. (biggest problem was not put back in before De-hibernation)

Now...
I get "USB device not recognized", "Unknown USB device" in DeviceManager when plug in & no drivers installed shown. The usual device plugged in/out sounds.

The stick is still ok read/write in anotherPC ( XP ).

The 'same USB port"1"' is ok with 2Tb & 1Tb USB drives . Ext DVD drive ok in this port.
Other USB sticks no go , Mouse wont work in this port.
I tried another USB port"2" (pulled out mouse) & USB stick not recognized either.

But just 1 time I inserted the original stick in 'same USB port"1"' & it came up with drive letter & I could read files.

I have tried "update driver for Generic USB hub(s), no change.
have power down & restart.
have cleaned gold fingers of port & sticks (properly)
Dell support Assist 'troubleshooting' says no issue with USB(stick not inserted), but enumeration problem when stick plugged in.

If it is suspected this might not be win7 issue but dell driver? issue I can ask on dell support.

I was going to try the "Windows USB Troubleshooter Fixit tool", but not available anymore from MS, tried wayback machine but couldn't find it there. anyone know where can dnload ?

I have a 'SM bus device', 'driver not successfully installed', ' no driver found' error, not sure when it appeared. (shouldn't attribute to this USB issue, but may be indicative?) I'm fixing this soon...

Ok,
just fixed it...
I inserted, removed, inserted until I got a drive showing in Total Commander, Just to be sure I copied some files to the stick drive.

Then I use safe eject in task bar & now it picks it up every time.

Thanks mr t

Well glad you got it fix'd! I found an MS USB Troubleshooter that may have worked. Click the link below. I found the MS Fix It Tool. Downloaded it and tried to run it on my system. It wouldn't connect to the server. MS slowly pushing Win7 out the door.
