Solved USB works for some but not for all?

Hi, this is a weird one.

At the back of my comp i have 6 USB's that take things from mouse to keyboard to piano keyboard and all work.

When i use a USB stick though things are different. My PC recognizes the USB and a little light comes on it and it does come up as a drive but when i try and open the USB I get the error:

G:\ Application not found

It is always G:\ no matter which USB is use, front or back. I definitely know the ones on the back are working as I'm typing through my keyboard USB now. All of them work but not for USB memory sticks???

I have tried 5 USB's now and all give the same error. Does anyone know why this is? In device manager there seems to be no issues with drivers, they all seem to be up to date.

I wouldn't mind but i need to save a book I am writing, if i lose what I've done so far I would die I back up to a spare hard drive so there is some cover but still nowhere near enough.

You say you have tried 5 usb. Does that mean 5 different usp ports or 5 different usp sticks?
With your usb stick plugged in go to Start/Computer and see if the usb stick is shown there.

I would presume that you are calling USB ports as USBs. Clarification as requested by Layback Bear is in order. Please specify USB ports and USB devices for clarity.

Assuming that you have one USB device, which when plugged into five USB ports on your computer all give you that message, there is a distinct possibility that your pendrive is infected.

Go to Folder options and unhide hidden files and protected system files.

Press and hold Shift key when you insert the pendrive and till it is recognised.( This will prevent the auto.inf being executed.)

If you find any auto.inf and recycler in the pendrive select these and press Shift+delete to send those to oblivion.

Now safely remove the pendrive and then plug it in normally.

Problem resolved?

Note: In any case, check your system thoroughly for any malware.

Your pendrive/s also need to be sanitised. That after you report the status.

Actually according to this there is only 4 x USB ports http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3485#sp
The mouse and KB ports are the PS/2 type so unless steman has a USB card or a hub parked in one of the ports in the machine that is all there is?

Oops unless the front two are being counted - sorry I thought it was meant say at the back.

Hi, this is a great forum, I always appreciate advise.

I have 4 USB Port on the back and 2 on the front.


I tried 5 different USB sticks but none worked no matter which port i placed them in.

I have had new luck though. When i double click on the USB Stick(which does show on 'devices with removeable storage' i get the g:\ error message; but when i right click on it and select 'open in new window', it allows me access to whichever of the 5 pendrives i use.

So in the end, all is ok. It's just strange a double click is different than right-click - open.

Well glad to hear it is working but odd behaviour all the same and needs sorting in the future as the ports should "see" the sticks as soon as they are plugged in.

Just out od interest go to Control Panel > Autoplay > and check out what is in my pic.

Yes, it is strange but that shouldn't be so and so I will say all is not O.K.

In any normal computer, with or without Auto Play checked, double click should open the removable device and not give out the message you had displayed.

IMO all your pendrives are getting infected from inside your computer or got infected from other computers - if you had lent them.

So do check your system for any malware. And do check your pendrives for that autorun.inf and recycler.

Just a thought too jumanji could be the drives have just been corrupted by unsafe removal? But I agree that they should all be swept with a few scanners.

I do not think, ICit2 , the files are corrupted. If they were OP would have reported.

And then I had half a mind to advise the OP to backup all files on the pendrives because of the possibiity of the malware corrupting the files but then he has already said he had some sort of backups.

Also I would be inclined to think, that it could be a harmless irritation malware.

Well, all these are perceptions that may be right or wrong. Only the OP can tell after doing a malware check.

The saving grace is whatever has been advised can do no harm.

Hi Jumanji.

I have run malware check and everything is ok there. I'm going with blind optimism that things don't go south as right clicking is ok for now as I'm looking at a new PC maybe. There are other more important quirks that I don't understand, things happening that i'll post in a more appropriate section. You guys have helped me a lot and i appreciate it, cheers, Ste.

I didn't know anybody still double clicked anything. Do you have to double click other things to get them to work?

I have my system set to use double click.

Yeah, d-click works on all.

Just seems to be the USB ports.

Right-click - open works just fine.

Weird but cool since i can do the small work around.

Glad that you are confident that it is no more than a quirk and you found nothing to explain this strange behaviour. I shall keep my eyes and ears open to know whether any one else in the universe had a similar problem.
