Greetings.

Created a System Repair Disc of a Skylake USB3 system using windows Backup and Restore function, but could not find the USB3 drivers in the boot.wim. Attempts to use DISM to inject the drivers into boot.wim failed as well.

1. How to create one that works in USB3 system?
2. Can the windos 10 version be used as a susbstitute?

Many thanks and best regards,

Hi goopy,

@SIW2 has created a brilliant tool that will integrate the USB3 drivers. If you put the drivers in the bootx64 folder, they will be included into the boot.wim. Likewise, any drivers in the installx64 folder, will be included in install.wim.

Here is a link to the thread: Update your Win 7 installation media.

I hope this helps!

When I get time, I might have a look at doing something for winre.wim as well.

I also might look at a method to ensure the nvme updates are integrated correctly.

You can use the free version of NTLite to integrate any driver you want into your installation media.

Thanks for the kind reply, SIW2.

Here are a few questions I have:

1. We know W7 installation disc lacks USB3 drivers. But they have been installed, and doesn't the system pick them up when creating the repair disc? A repair disc without USB3 drivers is quite useless in a USB3 system.
Is this is know W7 defect?
2. How is the boot.wim created? It's different from the one found in the installation disc, and DISM has difficulty modifying it. Anyone like to explain?

3. What's the use of System Repair Disc? Does it include features that is not available in the installation disc? Can the installation disc be used as a substitute?

Many thanks and best regards,

The "create repair disc function" included in windows 7 just makes a bios bootable iso of winre.wim, then burns it to cd/dvd.

That is all. It does not add any drivers to winre.wim. It just renames winre.wim to boot.wim. It is exactly the same file.

On oem preinstalls some oems might have included drivers in winre.wim for their oem specific hardware. They also might have included their own oem recovery program.

The purpose of the repair disc is so you can boot it up and access the system repair functions - e.g startup repair.

If you have the installation media, you can access the same functions from that. Not everybody has the installation media. That is why MS included the "create repair disc" function.

Windows 7 does not come with usb3 drivers already installed. If you want to use usb3 you have to install the drivers yourself.

It is not a "defect". When win7 came out, usb3 was not widely used, so MS did not include the drivers.
