User admin account preventing installation of software

When I attempt to install an update or new software, I get a popbox requesting admin approval from the admin user account I created. But when I enter the admin password I get a wrong user/password error. So I left that standard user account (used by our sons) and tried to login to the admin account directly, but I get the same error.

It isn't a password mistake that's been the same for years.

Short of reinstalling Windows 7 can I remove that admin account or reset the password? Maybe from a prompt?

I'm not very familar with Windows 7. It's Home Premium 64-bit.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

If you still have the factory install that is the worst possible install of Win7 one can have, larded with bloatware and duplicate utilities which interfere with better versions built into Win7. I attempted the first option you listed for Password Reset. I followed the steps at the link...in fact I followed them twice just to make certain I hadn't made a mistake.

When I tried to login to the user account with the new password I got this error message:

"The User Profile Service service failded the logon

User Profile cannot be loaded"

Do I have any options besides the Clean Reinstall? I only want to avoid that for now because the system has Microsoft Office 2010 on it and my son can't find his Product Key.

The guide to enable the built in admin worked like a charm! Through the built in admin user I was able to create a new admin user. I then installed Belarc to get a report printed in case something unanticipated went wrong when I deleted the non-functioning admin account. I also followed your advice and downloaded the LAN driver from Gateway just in case.

I ran malwarebytes, superantispyware, ccleaner and Microsoft Essentials AV as an added protection and then deleted the bad admin user.

That laptop is running better than new.

Should I disable the built in administrator or just make certain no one logs in under it for day to day stuff?

And thanks a million again!! Your guides and the links to the guides of others not only made this possible but the guides are so well written I could do them through the fog of nerve pain and related medications.

I'd disable built-in and run another Admin acct.
