Using a a VPN

I make use of a VPN, it adds another network adapter, a 'TAP-Win32 Adapter V9'. When its connected all internet traffic uses it, browsers, downlaod managers, email etc. When I disconnect all traffic reverts back my normal LAN connection through the router.

Is there a way when its connected to route some applications through it, and some through my normal coonection? For example make Firefox use the VPN and Opera uses the normal connection?

Hello,

Ideally you want to use your own default gateway for everything browser based because it will bring the speed of your VPN down.

To change your VPN Settings so that it doesnt use your remote connctions default gatewat do the following (Windows 7):

1) Click Start>Control Panel.
2) Open Network and Sharing Centre.
3) Click Change adaptor settings on the left hand side.
4) Right click your VPN connection and select 'properties'.
5) Click the Networking Tab.
6) Double Click Internet Protocol version 4.
7) Click Advanced.
8) Un-tick use default gateway on remote network

Thanks for your reply, its appreciated. The VPN is as fast as my own gateway, so speed is not an issue.

What I'd like to know is if there is a way to route one browser down my gateway and another browser down the gateway of the VPN at the same time. So far I've not found a way, unless anyone else knows there is?

Not to my knowledge. Your browser will only use your default gateway. If the VPN connection is set as the default gateway then all traffic will go through this connection.

Yes this will do the trick. But then it works for all network programs like e-mail, ftp, browsers, p2p etc.

But you can install a simple proxyserver on vpn-server and point your browser to use that proxyserver

But you can install a simple proxyserver on vpn-server and point your browser to use that proxyserver

for example install Installing Squid Web Proxy Server on Windows 7 | Talk Web ID on your vpn server.

Please tell me what ip-adresses get the vpn-client (so not the server) on the vpn-tunnel? ipconfig will tell you. route print -4 will tell you as well

post output on vpn client of command route print -4 if vpntunnel is active
