Using magnify.exe

Hi Guys,

I hope you can help - my friend and I are developing an application which is fundementally built around Sybase PowerBuilder. We have sucessfully incorporated code which allows the incorporation and running of secondary routines - for example Adobe Reader and Winzip - and under WIN XP we were able to 'run' that O/S version of 'magnify.exe'.

However we have now upgraded [?] to WIN 7 PRO and find that whilst the non-windows routines still function from within our application that we can no longer 'run' this later version of 'magnify.exe'. Yet we can run magnify.exe externally to our application and then use it to magnify within our applications window, so there is no intrinsic problem in co-running the programs.

Our suspicion is that it's being blocked by the vista/win7 security model in that when we execute it manually it has the permissions of the logged in user which is the administrator.

Our thoughts are that when it is executed from our application it runs with the permissions attributed to the application process, which, if I'm reading the forums correctly will itself run on a restricted account. This blocks certain things from running, particularly those which exist in the system32 directory. But why we are able to use our application to execute Abobe/IE/Firefox/Media Player v12 but not magnify is a puzzle.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Again,

For anyone who might be interested - the solution was simples [ as the meerkats might say ].

All I had to do was to bring up Properties from the taskbar icon of my application, navigate to Compatibility and then check the Priviledge Level box to run as an administrator!

Aren't Microsoft wonderful!
They take away with one hand and give back with another; only they leave you to work out where they put it for yourself
