Using Utorrent

Here is a copy of a post i made on the Utorrent website that will fix youre speed issues with Win7 and Utorrent. This is using the latest version of Utorrent.

Hey folks. Just wanted to add my 2 cents in hopes that it helps, from what i was able to do to fix the speed issue somewhat.

Utorrent does in fact work oddly on Win7. Even though i have the firewall turned off and all the other security goodies i still get a red skittle. Even though i tell utorrent to check the port and it comes back as good.

I suffered from speed issues you until today. I was downloading a file and was getting 1.2kb on it since yesterday. (my speed now on this particular torrent is between 60k and 80k and consistent) So what you need to do first is most important.

1. Close Utorrent down

2. go to window button (start menu) find utorrent and RIGHT CLICK on its shortcut. Click RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR.

3. Start your download, then look at the log and you will notice the error about the firewall exception is gone and your downloads will speed up.

4. fallow the guides laid out in Switeck's signature (from the Utorrent Forums). Specifically this one 2nd:Recommended uTorrent settings: forum.utorrent.com / Suggested changes for Speed Guide:

After doing these things my speeds increased. Im still working on resolving the green skittle issue but as i have seen from my download experience on Win7 it seems to be a non issue as i have gotten download speeds that were normal to me on XP, which is of course determined alot by the torrent seeders and peers.

Remember too that Win7 is a beta and not every piece of software we use on a daily basis is going to work 100%

Ok i just resolved the issue with the green skittle and my speeds have gotten back to normal. I fallowed a post by Ultima (a moderator on Utorrent forums). The info in his post:

"- Hover over the network status light in µTorrent's status bar and tell us what the tooltip writes.
- Does changing ports stop this error from occurring?
- Grab TCPView from sysinternals.com, run it, and see ifthere are any other applications using your listening port."

I crabed the program he talked about and checked. Sure enough even though utorrent did the port check and said it was open and good to go i found another process using the torrent. I just simply choose another port, added the port to my firewall to pass and changed Utorrent for the new port. Closed down and restarted; problem fixed. -- U still have to run Utorrent in administrator mode --

I didn't know there was a speed problem...uTorrent works fine for me in Windows 7...same speed as ever...are you sure the speed is realeted to Windows 7? Sounds more like a networking-problem-thing to me.

I've also had some speed issues & Disk overload errors since using W7. After about 20 mins the Disk Overload 100% error was showing in the status bar & download speed dropped to below 10kbps. Only found a way round it by turning off disk read/write chaching (mentioned in utorrent forums)....Strangely have not had the skittle error, green every time for me.

i stay away from this app like the plague.... cant understand its popularity given all the connection/speed issues... granted if you know the app and are comfortable with some advanced settings it could be set up ok... but i never get the upload speeds that i should see... while yes, i know how to set it up... 1.9 is extremely buggy imo, while 1.8 is ok, and 1.7 is just old

My uTorrent gets good performance when it isn't being throttled by my ISP.

Mine works fine and before we all get "honked" for discussing utorrent there are perfectly LEGAL torrents -- for example you can download the latest builds of SUSE 11.1 from Novell via a torrent -- they aren't going to use "illegal methods".

Utorrent version I'm using 1s 1.8.2.

I've had REALLY fast downloads -- under 1hr 30 for a 3GB or so of "Not saying" but you know what it is.

Just alter the up / download speed ratio's on the utorrent options. You aren't killing the swarm -- most UPLOAD speeds are pretty sh---y on even decent ISP's and cable systems whereas download speeds can be really nice and fast.

Back home I've got nearly 50 Mb/s download speed -- it's quicker to RDP to my home computer, download the torrent on to a local disk on the home computer ( I can log off / disconnect while the download is taking place as well) and then transfer the file to a work network in the UK via bog standard FTP which I AM allowed to use and then copy to USB stick to take back to my base in the UK while I'm working here.

(Another advantage is that if work tracks what sites you logon to there won't be any record since all the work is done on my computer back home in Iceland -- wonders of RDP and Networks for you. Also no sites are ever blocked unlike some corporations which screen what people logon to).

-- I'm not going to use utorrent for legal downloads or otherwise in a workplace -- jobs are pretty scarce at the moment and I've seen people being fired for less. If you do use it at work then BE CAREFUL -- quite frankly I'd advise against it.

Set your upload speed to around 10 - 20 kb/sec and you'll find that should open up the torrent a bit faster for you.

wow jim, iceland is more modern than the states here by far far reaches.... you guys use alot of geothermal, natural gas powered buses and vehicles and a pretty ok inet @50.... if i could wear shorts there i might consider moving, hahaha

I see no justification to this, 1.9 works fine for me and everyone I point to it. Nobody ever has any problems with it even right out of the box.

If you scour their forums, you shall see the opposite... tho i havent been there in a few months myself ... and also 1.9 has been out for quite some time now, around 5 months or so, but problems were abound... i had no issues with download speed, but with upload (which most ppl dont concern themselves with or worry about). You will see on any particular torrent that most utorrent users are 1.8 instead of 1.9... i'd say 65/35.... but like alot of things, what doesnt work for some works for others, and vice versa

I often think that users should get a bit of "Configuration" choice -- for example I don't need a 50 Mb/s download speed but I'd certainly swap that for say 35 Mb/s download with 15 MB/s upload -- but unfortunately "It don't work like that".

The Download speeds that are being banded about are like Digital camera makers boasting how many MP's their cameras are -- in fact if you know anything about digital cameras some of the lower MP cameras are actually better than the higher MP one's (less noise -- possibly larger pixels etc etc).

The numbers are often used purely in the sales spiel. Most users would actually be better off with possibly lower speeds but a cheaper service.

Won't happen though.

I have never had a problem with any version of uTorrent . My internet connection is a sad joke 256/64 ( don't laugh) .

My max download speed is around 30kbps and uploads approx. 6kbps.

I can max them both out with uTorrent , when there are enough peers.

Your internet provider might be throttling your connection. Do you have Protocol Encryption enabled? I do and i am pretty sure my ISP doesnt throttle torrent files.

Most likely

uTorrent (any version) has worked out of the box on all versions of Win7 for me so far

No complaints.

Heya jim... nah, its not throttled here, thank god... but yea, loaded up utorrent once again on first 7 install just cuz i noticed the little gadget (which i did like). But yea, for some reason, and i know all the tricks and such and spent many a hours on that forum reading... I like the whole idea and concept of the 1.9, the utp and such, but its so buggy... yes, i disabled it, binded ip and yadda yadda, but no matter if utp, tcp/udp or both i had the same upload slug... would start out very very slow and maybe after 10 min finally reach maybe 50% of the upload limit that i would set (usually 80%). Trying out 1.8 worked fairly wel, but i wasnt getting the speeds i would get from other clients. This would be something from Sunmicro, legal stuff, well seeded... best control variable i could think of. 1.9 failed miserably for me, and this just isnt on 7, same for XP as well.... not a router issue as i would have similar problems with other clients or other ftp etc... I also noticed, coulda been coincidence, but i got better speeds on 1.9 from a 1.8 host

The key to uTorrent is choosing a good 'port' that's not blocked by the ISP and/or setting one that's not too popular I use a fixed port in the range of 56100-57000

Maybe I'm being a bit of a dimwit here but why would your ISP BLOCK ANY PORT from your HOME connection (Your Router / Firewall etc).

I know if you are using say an Internet Cafe or Wireless network OUTSIDE your own router then ports might be blocked --most of them block SMTP E-Mail to prevent SPAM and mail-bots so you are forced to use some horrible web mail client when sending emails away frome home (unless you use RDP to home computer or some horrible paid for email sending service -- not worth it).

But why would they block any port from INSIDE your router system. The problem I believe was the poster was complaining about UPLOAD speeds -- this is 100% due to the hardware provisions of the ISP and you can't really do much about it other than change ISP's (where possible).
