Very Slow Download Speed on Windows 7

Hey guys,

Before I was running Windows 8 and got a download speed of 20-50MB/s average, yesterday I installed Windows 7 and have since been getting a download speed of 0-6MB/s. This is on the same laptop in the same location.

I tried booting it up into Safe Mode with Networking and tried a speed test there too, there I got a speed of 20-30MB/s. Is there some kind of setting or program that is interfering with this?

Anyone have any solutions for this?

Wifi or wired ?

If WiFi then try a reboot of the router and also try changing the wireless channel on your router. Another possibility is a poor or incorrect WiFi driver for your laptop. Did W7 automatically install one or did you install your own.

It's WiFi, installed the driver directly from the Lenovo website for my laptop make so it should be the correct one. Not sure if changing the router channel would change anything considering it had fast speeds on Safe Mode and Windows 8, but I can try give it a shot.

WiFi connections can cause surprising issues particularly with speed. Although not quite the same issue as yours, I've had my router frequently "lock" into a slow speed state of around 1 to 5mbs. I didn't believe it could be a WiFi issue but a direct connection showed the speeds were good at around 37mbs. It was conflicting channels with other nearby routers that was the cause... and the fix was not to use the often quoted channels 1, 6 or 11 but something like 8 or 9. Although technically overlapping and not optimum my speeds have since remained good. I should add that this lock up to slow speeds occurred when I seemed to connect with two devices together or a W8.1 trial (at the time). Again a different driver was in use.

The only definitive test is to try it wired direct into the router and see what speeds you get then.

Tried changing the channels to 8 and 9, had no difference there.

Just went into the same room as router and tried a test there, speed was normal at 50-60MB/s, went back to my room and it was back to 0-6. I can't stay in there or move the router itself so that's sadly not a fix.

I just wanna know why I get such slow speed in here as compared to Win 8/Safe Mode compared to normal Win 7 and if there's a fix/solution for it.

Still on WiFi when you mention going to the same room as the router ?

Could you identify the driver that W8 used and see if its possible to install that.

Still on WiFi yes.
And I don't have Win 8 anymore so I can't identify the driver it had, but I assume it'd be the Win 8 version on the Lenovo driver page, which I downloaded the Win 7 version of.

Also I just took a speed test after turning laptop on today and speed seems to have returned to normal..? No idea what caused that but I'll post back here if it drops again.

OK, well pleased to hear its back up to speed anyway. You'll just have to see what happens long term.
