Very slow response in Windows Explorer

In drive S:\ I have a number of folders and subfolders. One of the subfolders holds about 20 image files, each about 35MB. When I point Windows Explorer to that folder it takes about 30 sec. for the results to be displayed. Meanwhile a green progress bar slowly creeps along the address window. Other subfolders in the same parent folder are not affected.

The drive has been indexed, but no help. However when I add the immediate parent folder to my Library, the display in Windows Explorer is almost immediate.

Is there a solution to this problem?

All my system specs are in my profile but I don't know a quick and easy way to include them here:
Win7x64 Intel i7 16GB mem.

Blumesan mate might I suggest you copy the data to another drive and just dump that one because it sounds as if the data has been in part corrupted or worse infected with something. If you want to scan it try these

It might be an idea to scan the machine per se' for that matter and include this

Folder Options

Well I'm not sure if this will help but perhaps you could try it?

Right click on the library and choose properties. Is it optimized for General Items?



Do the same by navigating to the folder and checking it's properties. Make sure that it's also set to General Items.



See if that helps.

Ah, great minds think alike. That was the first thing I tried. Copied the entire folder to a new folder on a separate hard drive. No joy. Even trying to read the new folder took forever.

PS I have scanned both the folder and complete drive. No errors or malware.

Hmm well I see your board has 1.1 and 2.0 USB ports now I know it shouldn't make much of a difference but are you using one of the slower ones?
I was going to suggest you update the USB drivers but they are mixed in with the chipset I am guessing because I cannot find them as dedicated points / drivers.

The same issue on my machine has been caused by:

Corrupt .avi video files.

Thumbnail caching enabled rather than disabled on folders containing images.

Antivirus configured to scan all file types and all folders when a folder is accessed.

Thanks for your reply. There is no USB involved; no stick. The drive involved is internal (SATA).

Sorry wasn't thinking that great eh? If I had seen a pic of the Disk Management I would have picked it.
So now I ma thinking it might be an idea to test that drive - SeaTools for Windows | Seagate and see if this comes up with anything.

Other folders in the same drive, including some that contain many more files, open quickly without problem.

I followed Callender's suggestion and optimized the folder for images. This helped a great deal, but some of the file details are still very slow to show up.

Thumbnail Caching

I'm not sure how to disable thumbnail caching for just one folder. I've disabled entirely like this:

If you clear the thumbnail cache folders containing images will initially be slower to open but once the cache has been rebuilt it should get faster.

Something to try

Here's a quick test.

Navigate to your problem folder and open it then click Tools> Folder Options and set them like this:



You will see icons rather than images. If it then opens faster it might be time to scan the folder for corrupt images or possibly even use a different image viewer.
