Hi
I'm running Windows 7 64bits Ultimate
and it is annoyingly slow at booting

first there is the ASUS logo which takes barely 1 second...
then the " Starting Windows " screen, stays for around 15sec so nothing wrong here
but then, there's the problem : the screen goes off for like a whole minute ! (not just a black screen, it goes completely off, but the pc is still running)
after that, the " welcome " screen which stays for less than 5sec and then the desktop finally shows up

I have no idea where the problem could be coming from
i formatted the pc recently using Windows 7 dvd (to solve this same problem) but no luck

I don't know if it's some driver, or some windows update...
so please help

It's best to enter your system specs through the user control panel at the top of the page.

Regarding slow boot, type msconfig in the start box. Go to the startup tab. Uncheck everything that is checked except anti-virus. Save and restart.

See if that improves things. You don't need all of that stuff to start up with Windows. If it turns out an app won't start as expected, you can go back to msconfig and re-check it.

There may also be some BIOS settings that can speed up boot a bit, depending on your individual BIOS.

If your total boot time is under 90 seconds, that's not bad.

So I tried it and unchecked everything except for the antivirus (kaspersky internet security 2012)

but unfortunately nothing changed
the screen still goes off for more than a minute before the desktop shows up...

However, I forgot to mention something : when I reboot , the whole startup process (shut down time not included) takes only 35seconds
the screen doesn't go off or nothing...
whereas when the pc is off, it takes more than 90sec to boot...

so I guess it should a hardware problem ?

Check also msconfig>Services, Hide all MS Services then uncheck all but AV, make sure nothing sneaks back in. You now have a clean boot.

Update your display driver in Device manager.

Look for newer drivers in optional Updates.

Study the logs especially Performance log which logs startup. Use the SYstem Resources to gather clues: troubleshooting steps

Use the tool which the Pro's use to trace these issues: Trace Windows 7 boot-shutdown-hibernate-standby-resume issues - MSFN Forums

You could download this little script:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/720-restart-time.html

That will give you an official reboot time.

If it is under 90 seconds with that tool, I wouldn't get too excited.

But a black screen for more than a minute is not standard.

I notice you have a 5400 rpm drive, which is slower than most boot drives. Maybe you should not expect much given that drive.

The solution to the problem "Slow Windows startup" is:
1) go to ASUS support web page
2) type in your model in the searchengine below the Download section
3) choose your OS and then
4) go to Others folder and download and install - Intel Management Engine Interface ( Version V7.0.0.1118) AND Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver ( Version V10.0.0.1046)
Restart your laptop and you will be amazed how fast it can boot.

just out of curiousity.have you got kaspersky scanning at start up?
I use kaspersky internet security myself and this seems to be a common problem amongst users although i havent experienced it myself..might help if you go through your settings and make sure a boot time scan is not running..just a suggestion.

Fixed my slow startup with asus computer

My computer was locking up on start up and it was only 1 month old. In order to get it to work I had to turn it on & off 4-5 times with the power button. (My computer doesn't have a reset button.)

I read somewhere that one of the asus programs clones itself and can cause slow computer problems, so I went into the start up menu and turned off all the asus programs and now my computer works. (I didn't need them anyway as I only use my computer to check email and listen to the radio.)

I now also turn off the internet connection before shutting down the computer because that also seemed to be slowing down / locking up the computer on start up when I am in a new area.

I also cleared off all the short cut buttons except the antivirus software and browser so my desktop is very empty.
