VideoCard crashing(less 1 month old)

Hello it's been a little while since I was here last... Never thought I'd have another issue so soon actually...

My video(s) card is a:
SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100283VX-2L Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT) 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card w/ Eyefinity



The first one I had bought December of 2010 and it crashed and stopped working in October of this year. It was on warranty so I sent it in to get fixed and I got it back a couple of weeks ago. But in the mean time while I waited for the card to come back I bought another of the same type to replace it so I can continue playing games and using my PC in general. I was planning on buying a second anyways to crossfire them so it worked out. I figured the first card going out was a what ever moment or something 1 time thing...


The second card I bought crashed just like the first a month after I bought it. I'm right now conversing with the makers--Sapphire (Athlon Micro)--about getting the second one RMA'd and possible the first one again as now after the first one had come back I was going to crossfire them together but I was too lazy to do it, but the day I was going to--maybe going to... I'm pretty lazy sometimes--I tried turning on the PC and realized it was the same thing that happened to the first card. It crashed, broke, or whatever happened it doesn't work anymore. I always turn my PC off at night and the previous night it was working fine and the next morning it was no more... I popped out and back in the RAM and tested to see if it was a RAM problem I even did the same to both cards interchanging them in the PC.


The new one I had bought a month prior was busted. The one that came back from repair I popped in thinking how lucky was I that I had a back-up video card... sorta. Ended up that theres something wrong with the repaired card still. The computer is able to turn on so the card isn't broken like it was before atleast, but theres little gray boxed every where and the computer crashes--not to a bsod or anything--and it says in the bottom corner of the screen that the graphics card failed and restarted it self or something. It does that alot... mostly when I play games.


On the web I go to pages with videos on them like youtube and the video is green screened. I have to watch the video through then replay to actually see the video itself. I can't even watch DVDs on my PC anymore. I have doubts its totally the graphics cards at fault here. I think it has to do something with my motherboard or even the RAM. The motherboard was an openbox when I bought it from Newegg. I was being cheap I didn't think there was anything wrong with it. I can't think of anything else that could be wrong, but I'm no techguru... I'm not good with computers-period anymore... I tend to brake them more than fix them these days :/


I would love some help please I'm going crazy almost as bad as last time

Welcome to SevenForums.

I think at this point the only real way to know that it's your video cards or motherboard related is to try them in another system.

Do you know someone who would let you do this? Or do you have another computer in the house you can try them in?

Sadly not. That is for the motherboard part. The graphics cards are broken. They don't turn on in my or any other computer. I don't know why they broke they just did...

Although I do have a question: I was checking my motherboard maker's website: ASRock and I couldn't tell, but I don't think my video cards are supported on their motherboards... I know my processor is thats why I even got it. It was designed for the 6-core.

I was also checking their RAM (QVL?) but when I looked in their listing... I didn't find my RAM in that list either... Would those be any real issues to my overall system in potentially causing issues like this?

I saw on the website that your board supports both AGP and PCI-e, only the PCI-e slot is only 4x.

Most are 16x or 8x at a minimum, now I'm not sure if this is what's causing the problem.

It almost sounds as if your PCI-e slot is delivering to much voltage to the cards.

As for the Ram situation. It is always a good idea to look at the QVL first. However just because yours is not on it doesn't mean it won't work.

I would pick out Ram listed on the QVL then look up the specs on it and see how mine compare.

Mmm the part you mentioned about the PCI-e slot delivering to much voltage to the slot... Could make sense. Is there a way to check for that or am I SoL on that?

It could either be to much or not enough.

I don't know of any software that can read the PCI-e slot voltages maybe someone else has.

Well that sucks... I've already ordered a new motherboard just in case. This time by Asus and it's decent. Very similar to my current one, but less SATA ports on the motherboard. My current one has 8 the new one will have 5 which will suck... Cause I have 2 HDDs and 3 DVD drives that are SATA and I have 2 USB ports external on the top of the chassis that are connected into my SATA as well as the external eSATA port...

Hi mate just thinking possibly your power supply is not powerful enough to provide enough power to the six pin power connector. That motherboard should be fine with that card as the blue slot is @x16 and the white @x4.

I didn't think of that... I'll have to check the power supply just in case. I'm pretty sure its a 750w... Yeah just looked it up on newegg where I bought it:

I'll double check the connectors on the board next time I open it up.
