Did you download the ISO file for the free AV of your choice, then browse to the file from the File link on ImgBurn's Burn Image File tab? Next burn the ISO to CD at 4x speed.

Place the CD in the tray, restart computer and either tap repeatedly the Boot Menu key given on first screen to choose CD drive, or see if it prompts you to Press Any Key to Boot CD - if not, set CD drive as first to boot in BIOS setup also listed on first boot screen.

Thanks. I didn't have the speed set to 4x the first time.
Works perfectly now.

If no infection is found, can you download and burn to CD free Partition Wizard and take a good camera snap of it's drive map? Post it back using paper clip in Reply box.

If not, follow the steps I gave in my first post to make sure either 100mb SysReserved partition (if you have it) or Win7 partition itself is marked Active, then run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times.

Are you using the DVD or Repair CD to do your repairs?

I suggest running another one to cross check. Any of the above would be good.

I'll run Kaspersky Rescue Disc. The first one I tried quit working during the scan. Can I remove the viruses using this?

Also, how long should the scan generally take? It seems like it's just going forever, and not finding anything...

antivir appeared to hang on me or at least slow down to a snail's pace.

I tried it myself last night. I'lll probably be testing a couple more in the next few hours.

I prefer to list products which I've actually used.

Kaspersky claimed that the "databases are obsolete" and I was unable to update.
Antivir just kind of froze up on me.
AVG didn't work.

I guess I'll just try another.
Also, I've gotten the "Windows Security Essentials" pop-up a few times.

Haven't finished my evaluation yet, but Kaspersky is miles ahead of avira (antivir), avast, avg, and f-secure.

Don't worry about that "out of date-obsolete msg" - just plunge ahead with Kaspersky. It'll take a long, long time and will appear to be stuck at 1% for a while but it appears to work. My final judgment isn't in yet.

It has worked the best for me out of all the ones I've tried, but when I tried to remove the malware it wouldn't let me.

What is the malware? It's quite possible that it's blocked Kaspersky from updating and running.

There are a couple of confilcting posts...

In the first you can't even log into Safe Mode but later you can install software.

If you can get to the point of installing software then there's 1 thing you can try...

Once you boot up and see the task bar, right-click it and select task manager
   Note
You have to be quick, most malware/viruses disable task manager.

Once you've done this (if you can do this) then you can view the running processes for anything thatdoes not look right, e.g. apps runnign with random numbers or letters or anuthing stating 'Anti Malware' (even MSE doesn't state that).

That's what I was thinking. I know for sure that I have Windows Security Essentials, but I'm unsure about what else.

I can't answer the question as to why Kaspersky could find but not delete. Let's hope that someone else can.

Now I don't know if it will show the same problem but I just tried to Panda AV and interface and use was excellent. From these standpoints, I can also recommend Panda.

Let me know if your removal attempts fail (or if they succeed).

I just tried Panda myself, but it seemed to either not detect anything or freeze up.

Panda shouldn't have found anything if you ran it after kaspersky which I believe quarantined the virus. Didn't you check the kaspersky reports?

That kaspersky product impressed me for one of this category.

I also find your turnaround times amazing since I know how long it takes to run these products on even an infant system.

Download DDS from one of these links:
Mirror 1 Mirror 2 Mirror 3
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click the dds icon to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt <--this will be minimized in the task tray
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
Include the contents of both logs in your new topic.
