Trying to install drivers for the Visioneer OneTouch 9020 USB scanner on my 64-bit install of Windows 7 Ultimate. The scanner is from 1999 so it was made for Windows 98 and therefore made with 32-bit drivers. Windows 7 won't install the drivers unless they are 32-bit. I have checked the manufacturer's website (Visioneer OneTouch 9000 and 9020 Drivers and Manuals) and found that they dropped support after XP. I have also tried compatibility mode when running the program, but that didn't change anything and I still got the error message.

Desktop way differs from laptop/notebook way

For the desktop FIRSTLY put XP on a relatively small partition and then reinstall Windows7 as part of a dual boot system, by editing boot.ini to reduce default 25s delay to several seconds then if the scanner needs to be used go to XP within that time otherwise continue as normal.
