VMPlayer - Ubuntu to Host networking

Hi All,

Doing some experimentation with Linux (Ubuntu 11.10) in VMPlayer. All seems to be working nicely except the network connection. I can access the internet OK but I'm having problems accessing shares on the host. I am using a bridged network connection but attempting to open the Workgroup in Ubuntu gives the message "Failed to retrieve share list from server". Any ideas? Keep it simple I am a networking novice.

Are you just trying to access files from your host computer, or do you have other computers on your local network that you want to access as well?

Just the host computer. I know I can share folders but I would prefer to do it via the network as an exercise. As I mentioned this is an experiment and I want to learn as much from it as I can.

^ Gotcha. Ok, I was going to explain how to use the shared folders approach as this is the fastest and easiest way to make it happen.

If i get some time to experiment with a workgroup setup, I can try to write up a guide on how to make your Ubuntu host connect across the network. For the most part though, i would mount the CIFS share as a mountpoint within the Ubuntu host rather than browse through a GUI to try to remotely access the files.

I'm not sure if this fits in with what you actually want but IMO the simplest and most reliable way of sharing Linux amd Windows files on the Linux (or Windows) machines is to use SAMBA (usually easily available on most Linuxes --especially common distros like ubuntu.

The advatage is also you can have your Linux files available in Windows via READ WRITE as well.

Mounting Windows ntfs in Linux is relatively simple --it's been read write for years now but I prefer the SAMBA approach.
